GPS getting started

I am looking into getting a tablet and possibly getting the GAIA app, and back country nav? I am not up on this stuff. So far I think I will need a a tablet like a Samsung S with gps. Now the parts that really have me confused. Do I need to also purchase a hot spot or get a cellular program with a lot of gigs? I am guessing if I am out in the south western desert, there probably won't be any WIFI available?

What do I need to make this work?

I'm only a couple steps ahead of you without having pulled the trigger on the tablet yet... but I tried my wife's Samsung tablet with GPS and it works fine for GAIA without the need for wifi or a cell signal.

But I'm still considering just buying a used big screen Lowrance GPS like several friends use. Those work very well and they come ready to be installed without having to buy an expensive tablet mount. I've yet to see a Lowrance in a Jeep that I didn't like for its clarity and ability to show the trails.

I ordered an Android HU from Amazon named "pumpkin" running a quad core processor. Paired it up with a wiring system to use the steering controls and it works perfectly. Back to your question about GPS.

I am running Gaia GPS without no problems. I have like 10 maps downloaded offline. Gaia GPS needs online if you dont have online you can download like a Texas Map I think its like 200mb. Cost was around 230 dollars and install took around 3 hours. I also have Nokia GO nav, my phone attached with bluetooth ...I highly recommend you guys to look into these HU's on Amazon. I know they are a bit on the cheap side im terms of $$$ but there is a community on XDA that can help you with any problems.
