hood/fender lip mount ground

between this site and stu-offroad, i have found help on everything jeep i have needed. i wasn't surprised that stu had a review of the exact mount i received from right channel radios for my firestik.

i was surprised that stu's pictures and write-up ( FireStik Jeep Hood Antenna Mount Installation - 1 ) do not mention removing fender paint underneath the mount for a good ground. with all i have read about rf grounding, i thought that would be necessary. but if it isn't, i'll save the rust-breeding bare spot.

what does everyone else say?

thanks.

Personally, I would never stick an antenna on the front of my Wrangler... I would just hate it constantly being in my view, swaying & wiggling, it would be a visual distraction to me.

Is there some reason you don't want it to be installed in the rear where CB & ham antennas are typically installed? Something like a mount that is positioned over the tail light works really well, antennas work superbly there.

If you're thinking the antenna will "get out" better by being positioned up front, it wouldn't in a noticeable way. I installed my first antenna probably 53-54 years ago and a lot of the recommendations made by antenna guides are either strictly theoretical or they don't make a significant difference.

Sorry this pic isn't a better one of the mount but even my little 2' (FS-2) Firestick antenna works superbly in this location.

thanks jerry. i haven't drilled any holes yet, and your vote for the taillight mount seals it for me

i read forum threads here and elsewhere for hours about big horizontal ground planes and avoiding vertical vehicle features that steered me to the cowl.

thanks again.
