I've had it! All stock audio has got to go!

Hi all,

I've been thinking this through for a while, but I'm getting to a breaking point. I'm posting this to see if people concur on my general plan, if I'm missing something, if anybody has done anything similar (time, blood/sweat/tears/cost) or any other suggestions.

I've got a 2007 JKUX with uconnect (minus the u and the )

This is what I'd like to do:
1) digital audio head unit -- I'd like to avoid a CD player as I never use them
2) Amplifier -- 4 channels + discrete sub? 5 channels?
3) all new speakers (not concerned about the dash tweeters at the moment
4) sub(s) + box
5) wiring harnesses
I plan to source all of this from CL as much as possible. Also, I'm doing strictly single din since I'd like the space to build in a DIY computer--likely beaglebone-based interfaces and control for comms (cellular, HAM, ISM, etc.), ODBII, GPS, other misc controls, emergency beacon, mad security and possibly wifi.

Any ideas or recommendations for this type of layout? I'm no audiophile and my rig is loud is noisy as hell... I've just come to loath my audio and lack of connectivity. I'm an engineer at a small industrial long-haul radio company, so this just compounds the itch.

Peace!

I went with pretty much the same parts you are looking at, although I made no attempt to do it on the cheap.

I used a singe DIN headunit so that I can fit a scanner into the other DIN slot. The new 5 channel amplifier is in the very front and top of the passenger footwell, hidden under the carpet. Passengers don't even notice it is there even after being told to look for it.

The biggest work was re-enforcing the factory enclosures. The stock enclosures are basically an open speaker hanging in space with no air trapped behind them. The sub-woofer enclosure on my '13 was basically useless as stock needed significant work. I hired a performance stereo shop to do this work since they understand how to solve the problems much more then I do.

I have a few radios in the Jeep as well.

The parts are all listed in my profile: unusedusername's Jeep Profile :: Wrangler Rubicon

A few recommendations:

Head Unit - Pioneer NEX series has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

Amp - PPI 900.5 - There may not be a better buy for a 5 channel amp. You get true 75w per channel and 440w for the sub channel in a small chassis that sounds clean. $200

Speakers - go listen at a local shop and choose what sounds good to you. Speakers are personal preference and every brand sounds a little different.

Put your sub under the front seat. I have done many systems with the amp I recommended above, a custom fiberglass enclosure and Sundown SD-3 10" subwoofer.

You will be shocked how good it sounds.

I took Matts advice. Poineer head unit, the same amp, underseat box and sub, and Focal speakers in the dash.....AMAZING.

Not cheap, but if you HONESTLY want a great sounding system... Matts route is the way to go!

I ended up with an extra pair in April because of a cancellation.
