List of HU’s that don’t scream, “STEAL ME!”

I have been shopping for head units to replace my 130 base unit and have been extremely underwhelmed. Most non-touch units look like Transformers rejects, and the ones that don’t are touch screen models that would be stolen in a heartbeat.

I ride with no doors/top from May till October and need a low risk HU. After searching I found a couple. I found better luck searching for marine grade radios.

This is the most stock-looking one. It looks promising.

This is the big brother to the last one. Being double-din, it looks very stock.

It looks pretty decent. Doesn’t appear to have much functionality beyond the stock 130. No idea on sound quality.

Does anyone else have good options for simple nondescript radios?

Most have face plates that pop off with the push of a button. My previous Sony models and current Kenwood have face plates that take just a second to remove & hide/lock up somewhere.

Hey All, I'd look at the Joying units they look stock and have some cool capabilities. That's the reason I bought mine, not I have bumped up to a touch Secaine. As a matter of fact I have a Joying for sale that I'd let go CHEAP. I used it for 6 months and it works perfectly. Comes with the wiring and adapter kit.

I had $400 into it I'd let it go for $200 and free UPS insured adult signature.

I appreciate the sentiment mate but I was looking for something that both looks and and actually is cheap. I'm going to be twice as upset when some crackhead steals my cheap looking deck that is actually worth $400-500 dollars.

Thinking about a Bluetooth / USB adapter to an amp & eliminate the HU altogether.
But what would go in its place?

If I was running a nude Wrangler and was really concerned about radio theft, Id just go with a cheap single DIN Pioneer or Kenwood that has decent output, and then I'd remove the face.

At least this way you'd have something reliable and functional. A lot of the cheap no-names have near worthless tuners and horrible reliability. You could pick up a cheap single DIN from Pioneer for $80 and up.

That is a very interesting option, and exactly in line with what I was looking for. Thank you for finding it - the price is steep, but niche products like that are always expensive.

I like the suggestions of a cheaper radio with a removable faceplate. I think the least atrocious HU's are the Kenwoods. I'll go into a store a play with a couple and I may scrap the whole idea of a descript radio.

These Sony touchscreens look promising too. They are matte black and very plain looking.

I share your feelings with the car stereo aesthetics these days, I also went down the same road you are on, I purchased the single din Retrosound radio and while it functioned fantastic, the mounting method was really meant for vehicles with shaft style radios... I was never happy the way it was mounted in my YJ and sold it.

I decided to go the Alpine route for the plug & play power pack, iOS app tuning features... while the radio stands out in the interior, I can always pull the face plate off if I choose.

However in the case of your Jeep that 1.5 din I linked won’t have fitment issues and Retrosound also sells an easily hidden plug & play amp for their head units.

I just CL'd a 430rbz for $200 to take care of my broke 130. PLUG and PLAY like no other! And the sound quality is a big step above the 130. 28gb free harddrive, works with all the UConnect, steering wheel controls without a rat's nest of wiring. One of the best Mods I have done!

deeve likes this.
