Question Need help building sub box

I have a few questions regarding building a custom box for a shallow mount 12” sub.

The MDF sub box is going to to be under a plywood box mounted in the back of my jeep. I have 5” of height to work with, 17” of width and basically unlimited length. If I went with the Rockford Fosgate P3SD2-12, I need 1.25 ft^2 for a ported box. Therefore the box would be 5x26x17 (interior dimensions). Considering that the sub box is going to be underneath a plywood box, should it be down firing to maximize performance? If I do decide to make it down firing, can I make it ported? Or would I be better off doing something else? Finally, is 5” even enough space for the sub?

Have you looked at the sundown sd3? Specs say 1cf ported, frees up more room. You can do down firing, just make sure there is enough space for air to move correctly or it's going to be garbage.

One of the best "shallow" woofers out there. I bet I've built close to 100 under-seat sub enclosures with the SD-2 and SD-3 for Jeeps and haven't heard one bad feedback about the Sundowns. The newer inverted surround allows less clearance so it will fit in tight spaces but not as shallow as others.

Have you used the SD-2 or SD-3 under the front seats of a JK/JKU? Any pictures? I'm trying to get decent sound bass response, but don't want a box floating around the rear of my JKU and/or exposed to elements when the top is off.

I've done SD-2s and SD-3s under the seats. Also, rebuilt the stock enclosure and used a Rockford Fosgate but that was too far in the back to hear with the top off. Under the seats is so much better, it cannot compare.

SD-2s

SD-3s

What size SD-2/SD-3 are those in the enclosure?

Look like 10's, I don't think 12's will fit.

12s will not fit, only 11" between the seat rails.

I've always built MDF boxes, currently using the stock box, but when I get back into Jeep tinkering and after I relo my CB antenna, I'll give this a shot Custom Fiberglass Sub Box, plan on using the same location as the existing sub box, but raising the height a bit as I built a rear deck in my JKU.
