New Radio (JVC) Sound Help

Background: I bought my 07 JK used and the previous owner had a Pioneer AVH-P4000DVD (double din) radio in it. He also had a Kicker ZX650.4 amp wired in. A couple months ago, I was surprised suring the night by a heavy rain storm while my top was off. The radio still worked that morning but the display unit did not. Eventually I was unable to switch audio sources and once my radio station got changed, I could never get it tuned again. So, I made a switch.

I installed a JVC KD R97MBS (marine single din) radio this past weekend. Install went relatively smooth but my sound is pretty horrible. I am thinking it has something to do with the audio settings needing to match up with the speaker configuration but I am not 100% certain exactly what else is installed in the jeep. I know the output is run thru the amp though. The main symptom is the bass and "drum" sound. I have the bass (lows) turned up all the way and it is barely noticeable and any drum sounds are very faint and muffled by everything else. The drum sounds are close to a tin or metal sound.

I haven't worked with stereo systems since I was in high school in the 80's so you can imagine how tings have changed.

Anyone have a good starting place for me to start adjusting?

If you are hooked up to the amp using wires (not BNC cables) then double-check your speaker phasing because it seems that you are 180 deg out of phase on the bass. The problem could be at the input side of the amp or the output side.

Last night, while waiting out a baseball game, I decided to try a few things. I changed the x-over setting to 2-way and got a dramatic improvement. After I thought about it, it seems logical that the factory system would be 2-way.

I checked my wires and they seem to be correct.

Thanks for the reply.
