Sub system for 97 TJ

I used to have a Ford Ranger, had a bandpass box with a 12" alpine 1252w sub in it, powered by Xplod 1000w amp, sounded amazing. Well obviously the bandpass box wont fit in my jeep behind the rear seat...so on to this new project.

Problem is I'm on a budget of at least under $200. Would rather not spend over $120 though. I am going to keep my 12" sub, and use it. Another problem is my battery, at least I think. I tried dual 12s in my jeep when i first got it, couldnt turn it up barely enough to hear it and my lights would dim and battery meter dropped; took those subs out. Recently I turned up the bass for my soundbar speakers, and that alone made my lights dim. To fix this, should I buy about a $70 battery ( or is it worth the $160 nice ones).....or would a capacitor fix this issue. But all I could afford is a 2farad $40Power Acoustik one.

After that issue is fixed, I still need to buy a box (or make one) and an amp and wiring kit. I can buy the old amp I used to have for $60, and he is giving me a 12 single box but I dont know how good it is. Is it worth buying a custom box? Should I make my own? Buy one off of ebay? I just want a decently loud system, I know it wont sound like my bandpass did, but I would like the low deep bass sound if possible. And sorry I'm not very intelligent with car audio yet, still learning alot.

If you have a soft top, you'll probably enjoy your new system for about a week before somebody takes it and puts it on craigslist for someone else to enjoy at your expense.

before i would even think about doin a system i would get your electral problem fixed...could be a number of things. batt. Alternator goin bad, short somewhere.

in my 95 i just started to have a electral issue. i can play my system fine but when i turn on 1 set of my Aux lights my rpms drop way down. so before i use them again, or add my other sets, i'm replacing my battery and runnin dual set up. as well as up grading my Alternator.

your only as good as your weakest link.. so if your Alternator is bad or goin out a new battery wont do much for long.

stop by a shop and have them check them out if you dont have the stuff to do it. alot of places do it as a free service.

then once it's fixed worry about the system

Sorry, was in a hurry earlier before work...I didn't mean to come off like I'm against putting a system in a Wrangler. I had a system in my old truck and I LOVED it...the big thing is, because of how easy it is to break into a Wrangler, you will want to think long and hard about HOW to put a system into your vehicle. Just because you park in a safe area doesn't mean much....if a crook happens to be in the area, your stuff is still gonna disappear. I lived in a very nice area in a small town and have had multiple bikes stolen...one was even stolen from my garage during mid-afternoon. Someone just walked right in and took off on it.

Point is... if you're going to put a system in your Jeep, cool...have fun! But either buy or design a box that is going to be a b*tch to steal... make sure it's downfiring and bolts through/into the tub so if they want it, they have to get under the Jeep and start wrenching. Not sure how you can mount the amp, but I'd do the same thing...make it extremely difficult for a thief to steal any of the components. One thing my friend did when he made his nicer boxes is he used torx screws for everything so that a thief couldn't disassemble anything with basic hand tools (most thieves carry a screwdriver or two and that's about it).

Just my $.02...eventually I'd like to design a nice, but secure system in my Jeep...just got more important things on my plate at the moment, but I'm sure it'll be coming sooner or later.

OK thanks for the advice. I will take the time to make your its hard to take out of the jeep, definetly don't want it stolen.

OK...so say I do get the electrical problems fixed...sub and amp? Does anybody have a single 12 in their jeep, sound good? I will most likely be going with a custom sealed box.

i have a single 12 in my jeep in a old JL Audio stealth box. the box is the center console so looks stock and if bolted to jeep so a pain to even try to steal, saying you even know it's there. they no longer make it but i love it.

sound wise it's perfect not over powering but enough to let me know it's there. like i said before do not expect it to sound like your ranger, if you have the hard top off.

here is my system:
Radio: Kenwood kdc-mp345
Dash Speakers: Memphis MC 4x6
Door Speakers: Memphis MC 6-1/2 (custom installed)
Music Bar: JL Audio TR 4"
Sub: JL Audio 12w3v3 (was included in Box)
Amp: Memphis MC3004 (75wx4 RMS power)

i added the 6-1/2 in doors bc my jeep only had 4x6" & 4" speakers which can't handle any mid bass.

music bar is powered from head unit, since it's right above my head. then i have 2 channels of amp powering my door & dash speakers, other 2 channels power sub. i'm under powering sub but thats ok still sounds great bc everything blends together.

i have my amp hidden in my dash. you maynot be able to, but its something to look at. if you were to look @ my jeep you would never know i have a system in it and thats how i like it. (well should say a non jeep owner ..lol). research before you buy.

bottom line you'll probably want to mess with it some. as long as your happy thats all that matters.
