Which handheld?

Which handheld are you guys preferring these days? I need a pair for when my wife and I are out and one of us is out of the Jeep.

They don't need to have crazy range. If they work at 200 meters on flat ground I'd be more than happy. Definitely want something that will last a while.

We are not HAM licensed.

My recommendation is for you and you wife to become hams then purchase a pair of inexpensive Baofeng 2m/70cm handhelds. The test is actually quite easy and there are many practice tests available free online.

If you or your wife are adverse to becoming hams, then any brand name GMRS radio should be fine. There is still a license, which costs more than a ham license, but no test.

For 200M, a pair of bubble-pack FRS will do the job. No test, no license.

Becoming a ham will give you many more options and give you additional communications capability. (As well as another money hole )
Timglide and jaysong like this.

Thank you for the input. We have thought about HAM licenses. Maybe it's time we do it.
