Worry about rain with radio?

For those that have replaced the factory radio with aftermarket, do you get overly concerned with water damage? I am looking to swap out my factory head unit in my '13 JKU Moab with the Alpine system to an aftermarket unit, probably Alpine but still open on that one. I run naked as much as I can in the summer and my Jeep sits outside. I have a trail cover to use overnight if rain is in the forecast...but as Jeepers you know crap happens and sometimes you get caught naked in the rain or heavy dew of a morning.

I had the 2014 430 with Alpine option. I have only been caught in one down pour since upgrading but have had no issues with my radio. I had about 2 inches of water in my Jeep as the plugs were in. I had to pull seats and carpet to dry out. I mounted my new amp in place of the factory one. I am happy I did not mount amps under the seat. That would have been a disaster.

Forgot that in the first post...Marine radio wont be considered due to lack of options.

To be semi water resistant you want a full touch screen, buttons give water a way to get in.
I went with a Alpine ILX-W650 just for this reason, I have found that its not totally water proof, it still works great and 100% but the display is having some issues.
I'm going to buy another and add on a Tablet screen protector to see if that might help for next summer, I went top and doorless for 4 months in Maine last year.
Goal is to go a full 6 months, I'll get there.
I have a '17 with the Alpine factory system and it ties right in without a Maestro, amp and steering controls work perfectly, and now with a real eq and fully adjustable sound it really wakes the stock Alpine amp and speakers up.
The stock decks are complete crap for sound.

This is fantastic information, thank you! I was thinking the same thing with the full touch screen vs buttons, and yes the stock deck does push crap sound!

Try controlling a 100% touch screen radio while driving. Not to mention you have to be able to read the touch-screen options to select the correct ones, and they change depending on what you're doing. Doing that while driving would be a challenge, doing that safely while driving would be nearly impossible. I want a radio I can reach over and be able to control by feeling the buttons while not taking my eyes off the road.

Not to mention fresh water doesn't usually permanently harm low-voltage (12 volt) electronics, once it dries out it's normally fine. I wouldn't worry about it enough to ever make me want to go with a touch-screen display radio in my Jeep.

And what is the critical component most responsible for sound quality? The speakers.

The w650 is a simple touch screen, no fancy animations or odd menus.
It does everything pretty simply and using the right harness the steering wheel controls still work great so you don't Have to use the touch screen but you can.
And every screen is laid out identical so there is no searching.
There is dedicated space along the bottom for common functions, Volume/Source/Menu
Its not for everyone but for the price its hard to beat.

Thanks for your opinion. My current stock radio is mostly touch screen, so not much to get used to with lack of buttons. Also, the only thing I am doing going down the road is changing stations and volume...both with steering wheel controls. I wouldn't even think of putting aftermarket speakers in with a stock head unit because of the lack of sound quality from the stock deck, I will however eventually change out the stock speakers once I have a deck capable of less distortion at higher volumes.

You'd then be very surprised at the dramatic quality improvement in sound you'd hear immediately with just better speakers like Polk's DB series which are well matched to the power output of any head unit (due to their high 92 dB Sensitivity rating) and if used, aftermarket amps up to 80-100 RMS watts per channel. The most dramatic improvements you can actually hear are always with better speakers. And few, if any, can actually hear the difference in audio quality from different amplifiers if they have similar power output abilities. I've done A-B comparisons for people to demonstrate that.

I spent 40 years in the electronic/audio industry and did audio up to and including theaters and stadiums. This is not a subject I'm unfamiliar with.

I went with a $300 Android radio. I spent my budget on speakers and amps. Even JK owners look twice when I tell them it is not a factory radio. Unless you need satellite radio I think it is a great option. I have less than $2k in my whole setup and it sounds great!

Ok, thanks. Still don't want the stock deck and I never said sound improvement was my #1 reason for this post.

Just remember to match the resistance correctly.
I believe all the Alpine Factory amped speakers are 2ohm.
Most aftermarket dropins are 4ohm, that WILL have a negative effect on the output.

Any decent aftermarket amplifier worth installing will have the ability to select the correct output impedance like 2 or 4 Ohm to match the speaker's impedance (not resistance).

So to be clear that means Replacing the Stock Alpine amp if you have one.
Not a bad idea at all but will require a bit of dedicated wiring and proper placement.
