CK night run May 18

There have been previous discussions about doing a night run due to how fun and beautiful this trail is, but a traffic jam during the day. Someone (thanks person I don't remember) perused the lunar calendar for full moons. Next full moon on a Saturday is May 18. Weather will be nice down here, but cooler up there. There are bypasses around the fun stuff. There is a short jaunt thru a creek that is rocky, no way around it.

A no traffic run will take about 6-7 hours. However, a night run could be a little longer. Suggestions for meeting place and start times?

Twas I that performed said perusing, additional perusing tells me that sundown that particular day will occur at 7:24 pm (1924 for us military types). The chart also says moonrise is at 7:25 pm. I might suggest a meet time that gets us underway by 5:00 pm or so, with hopes of making it to CK by midnight. Maybe meet at the parking lot behind McDonalds at Carefree Hwy. East of the 17.

The McDonald's is a good meet place. I think 5pm is too "early", there will be a lot of people on the trail. Folks (SxS scum) driving like dumbasses to get back before dark. Maybe meet at 7ish?

7 would probably work, hopefully reduced traffic will lead to a quicker trip. You can count me in, ought to be a killer run.

Maybe splitting the difference would be the way to go and meet at 6. Still a bit before you get on the trail anyways.

I'd be down, but I need to know how much aftermarket lighting would be needed?

Full moon that night, so trail will be somewhat lit. Only extra lights I have are a set of KC LED LZRs on the front bumper, rock lights and rear bumper LEDs. I did upgrade my headlights and fog lights to KC LEDs, which are incredibly bright. This will not be a fast run. Nice slow steady mosey up the trail. All of the obstacles on this trail are optional.

Current plan, we are in. Going to go up Thursday and set up camp in the recreation area. Then a friend and I are going up to Overland Expo in Flagstaff on Friday. Then coming back down to meet up for the night run and back to camp when we get to the top.

My challenge is a front driveshaft... It's out. Should be a warranty issue, not sure how quick that will resolve. It should be easy, but sometimes those things aren't so easy.

I have my stock DS with yokes if you need it.

I haven't been to the overland expo. Good show for non-overlanding people such as myself?

In the warranty evaluation now... Sent a video yesterday, we'll see what they have to say.

Overland Expo would still be fun even for an off-roader. There's a decent amount of "gear" booths that you would enjoy like tires, winches, etc.

But the big ass excursion vehicles are cool no matter who you are... And there's usually quite a few to crawl around and drool over, like this GXV.

Warranty replacement driveshaft on it's way!

1 week to go. Meet at the McDonald's on carefree hwy and I17 at 6pm. Probably get back to Phoenix around 2ish am. Going to be cool up there, bring warm clothes. Food, water and flashlights. Usual offroad excursion gear.

Who be going?

I'm still looking good. Not sure if our camping and Overland Expo excursion is still on, but the night run is. Jeep should be done on Tuesday...

Yay! 5-6 will be cool! Going to need a solid nap on Saturday as I don't function well at 2am anymore.

Night run is upon us! Looks like a small group is going. Weather will be in the low 40's when we get up there. Sunset is about 730ish. Full moon, so the trail will be somewhat lit up. Temp will drop quite a bit when sun goes down. Therefore, dress according. Bring water, food, snacks and usual gear. Also include lighting devices. Just acquired a streamlight rechargheble LED lantern for this run. Silver bullets for werewolves, garlic for vampires. Head shots only for zombies. For bears and mountain lions, just be faster than the person next to you.

Behind McDonalds at 6pm. Carefree hwy and I17. See ya all tomorrow night!

This is going to be awesooooooome!

Thanks for the run guys! Had a blast and got 2 hours of sleep.... ROFL.

Great to see everyone avoiding the bypasses.

And no damage reported at least by the end of the run. Obviously, the day after inspections might still be interesting.

Thanks to my wrangler peeps for going, last night was awesome. I look forward to more night runs. Weather was great, no one got stuck (I did try a few times) and no carnage. Except for a load resistor that released the magic smoke. Traffic was awesome too! For your viewing pleasure:

Videos turned out really well. Was not sure how the camera would work at night. The loud creaking sound is my RH 4X4 sportcage. Hope to resolve it next week.

Thanks again.
