Death Valley 1/12-1/17

Morning,

I am planning a Death Valley trip 1/12-1/17 if anybody is interested. Understandable if you can't do the whole thing, but if you'd like to meet up for a few days we could coordinate that. The daily destinations are open, but do have area's of interest. Looking to start this trip in Beatty, NV and slowly making are way around the area. If anybody would like to join send me your phone number so we can get a group planning going. Happy Thursday!

Are you planning on remote camping? I will definitely meet up at least for a day or two from Pahrump and might take the RV to eliminate the to and from.

Off Pavement maybe looking at one night in Stovepipe Wells or Furnace Creek. Other wise remote camping, looking at staying at least near the race track, and Saline Valley hot springs. Just been doing research for now. Really want to check out the old mine sites, ghost towns, and the beautiful scenery.

I'm might be able to venture out there at the very end. I'll actually be at the big Gubmint place that adjoins Death Valley NP on the south side (Fort Irwin) during most of that. Not nearly as scenic or fun as Death Valley (and no wheeling unless you're in a HMMWV).

I'll post back as it gets closer. Hit up Brian/Off Pavement on Death Valley! That is his stomping grounds...and he has taken advantage of it.

So if anybody is interested meeting up at Death Valley Candy and Nut in Beatty 10a on 1/12. Plan is to stay 3 nights at Stovepipe Wells and follow Off Pavement around . On Friday night I plan on staying out near the Racetrack and then Saturday near the hot springs. Would like a heads up of anybody else is interested as communication will be difficult once we start this adventure.

Talking Oriental Wash & Scotty's Castle

FYI You can't get to Scotty's Castle from Death Valley. The road's supposedly washed out and it is well blocked from the Valley end.

Which way ARE you taking from Beatty to Stovepipe Wells?

My Jeep was thinking of checking Scotty's Castle Road from this side, from Hwy 95. It's probably equally well blocked at the (namby pamby) California state line. We have no interest in spending time at the Castle if we could get there and it's probably closed anyway, we just want to see if we can see any of the "washout". 16 miles and back on pavement shouldn't take all that long and gets us nowhere into Death Valley, so we we're going to try to find the way through NORTH of Scotty's Junction.
Oriental Wash might be out of the way to Stovepipe Wells, but, heck, WE might be going all the way back to Vegas same day!
We can make the Beatty meetup @ 10am Tuesday, so, if anyone's interested in Oriental Wash this week, please post here. Suggest another time and place if Tuesday won't work. Wednesday might be the best weather.

And now, the REST of the story...

A few years ago the signs said Scotty's Castle Road was closed so, naturally, I had to check it out. Well, sure enough, right at the east entrance to the parking lot of Scotty's Castle the road was well washed out - I wouldn't'a tried it in the Rubi and I was wheeling the Jetta.
But the washout didn't go as far as the WEST entrance to the parking lot. So I just drove through the parking lot to go around the "washout". The signs hadn't lied. The road itself was truly impassable, but not impossible to get through.

Stormiester plan on Tuesday is explore Rhyolite then Titus Canyon stoping at Leadfield to explore. Check out Death Valley Road Conditions on Facebook there's a page. Appears most of the roads have re opened, but due to extensive damage at Scottys Castle it is closed until they can remove all the mud and do the repairs. Only thing I've seen over the past week was Hunter Mountain and Road past charcoal kilns blocked due to snow and or ice.

Smile Titus Canyon Not to be Missed

I couldn't suggest a better route. Nothing like Titus Canyon with the top down.

We had just hit the pavement out of Saline Valley starting down the grade into Panamint Valley from the west when I heard that crack and roar familiar to anyone living near Nellis. But we were on the side of a mountain and it sounded way too low to be where it was.

Sure enough it roared down the mountain and disappeared down Rainbow Canyon (next to Father Crowley Point) WELL below the rim, like maybe down halfway to the bottom like I’d never seen an American pilot do since the 70s. If you look at a map there’s a dog leg halfway down and I don’t know how (s)he made the turn.

Talking Some Updates for Death Valley

Scotty’s Castle Road is also closed from the east. At US 95 the sign says closed in 15 miles, but in about 6 miles, at Bonnie Blaire, there were roadblock signs. Unlike from the west, these signs could be easily driven around but the winch didn’t want to. Now we’re almost curious enough to try it.
[You never know about “Road closed” signs. Sometimes they’re just to limit the liability of Big Brother and if you need help you’ll have to repay the government for it.]

We ended up turning towards Hard Luck where the snowy road went over the ridge and down Oriental Wash.

We ended up going out Hidden Valley (parallel to Racetrack Valley) and the long way around Hunter Mountain to Saline Valley Road and back through Panamint Valley. The snow around Hunter Mountain was challenging without chains but my stock knobbies made it with lockers in, barely.
It never got below 42 degrees on the mountain so the snow shouldn’t last long. It was fun being the second track, first in my direction.

We saw a bright red and a bright orange Jeeps near Stovepipe Wells but none of y’all. Beautiful, cool day.
