Mojave Road Pre Christmas Run (23 or 24 Dec)

All,

I am going to do an out and back (1 day) run of the Historic Mojave Road...or at least the majority of it. Either 23 or 24 December depending on if others are interested in going.

Below map shows the road where it goes from the Colorado (across from Fort Mohave) west across 95 to Fort Piute, then across the Mojave National Preserve in vicinity of (IVO) Soda Lake and Zzyzx down to Afton Canyon (the end). I plan on hitting the Road at 95 and heading west to Aiken Mine Road (just shy of Kelbaker Road coming out of Baker) and taking a quick tour of the Lava Tubes (they are a pretty cool geologic feature as I've seen them before). After the Lava Tubes, I'll either exit at Kelbaker Road for Baker/I-15 or Zzyzx Road just after Soda Lake so that I can see the "Traveler's Monument" out in the middle of Soda Lake. Quite honestly, it depends on if my wife and two little ones come along (wife is good for it, but a 3 and 6 year old will have a finite event horizon). You do have the ability to go the full pull beyond Zzyzx to Afton. There are many bail out points heading north to I-15 (starting at Ivanpah Road and then I marked most of the others with the "car" icon).

Gas is not an issue as I always top off at a gas station on 95 about 3 miles from the Road. The Mojave Road is driveable by just about ANY level of 4x4. People don't do it for the technical, but it is a bucket list trail for so many of the Overland crowd. And it is pretty and remote (pic below the map is New Years 2015 and us on it just east of Ivanpah Road).

If anyone has time off, post up. Next week, either 23 or 24 December works here.

I will be back in Vegas Jan 3, jeep goes under the knife the 4th hopefully will get it back by the 5th. Thinking night run\dinner on the 5th, and day run on the 6th if your free. Could I please to get your .gpx file on this?

Can't do the 23rd as my daughter and SIL arrive from Colorado, but I think the 24th would work.

.gpx file--sure thing. PM me your email sometime and I will push it to you. Depending on where you are at on the night of the 5th, I could join up for the run back east on the 6th. I will actually be at Fort Irwin (north of Barstow) on the 5th, so I have to drive right past Afton Canyon/Campground, Zzyzx, etc. I was going to drive the Government vehicle down, but I can always switch to my Jeep for this.

Good copy Brian. 24th works. I talked to the better half last night and she saw no issue with the kids tagging along / getting bored, so I will bring the whole kit. Goal right now is Soda Lake / exit at Zzyzx to I-15, but it is event driven. Plenty of bail points north to I-15 if anyone's fun meter gets pegged out.

Okay. Finalizing this one for a Christmas Eve run.

Linkup: Railroad Pass Casino/Hotel at 0830 (Off Pave-if that doesn't work for coming from Pahrump, post up). Leave from there, get gas just prior to the Road, and then get off the pavement for a good long while.

Good trip--a couple of slow areas (especially the Marl Springs section) and one of the shortest days of the year precluded our making it to Soda Lake. Photos below (and I'll post to the trail map and pic folder so they don't get lost).

We met up at 0830 and got on the way to the trailhead right away. After refuel at the Laughlin turn off (6 miles north of the Mojave Road) and air down, I show us moving on the trail at 0953. We made it to the Lava Tubes just after sunset and headed for Baker after checking them out. I show us having did 67 miles on the trail/road. Heck of a nice day out in the Preserve.

Our track on the Road:

Random coolness just prior to Ivanpah Road:

The convoy of two:

Joshua trees looking towards Kelso (heading down to the Kelso-Cima Road and getting ready to enjoy the undulating terrain going to Marl Springs)

At the Mojave Road Mailbox:

Next / last two are the end of the day at the Lava Tubes--showing both as they capture different highlights at that time.

As stated, great time. Saw a lot of good terrain and not very many others (one lost Razor/OHV actually on the Road with us). That is a story unto itself, but I am a tad late in helping out with lunch...so Brian can explain it if he chooses.

Howdy Clint... if you go next weekend we'll see you then.

Trip photos...

Hope this isn't a bad omen...

There are more, but I'll think I'll put them into a video slide show

This event was significant enough to me that I wrote a post about it here...

Nice...and spot on. Assuming sucks.

I even discussed with Rachel (once we got up on the high plain and had the blind corners/rises) that if she saw anything coming our way (eastbound traffic), not to assume that I saw it and to give me a heads up. Two vehicles going 20-25 mph each has its own bad dimension. And because I'm in "BFE", I don't assume we are the only thing rolling.
