That sounds like a great idea, bundle up, it's gonna be cold up there!

I have been keeping up with this local thread, and would love to get out with my 11 year old son for the first time in our Jeep on new year's day. Probably something fairly tame, since it'll literally be our first time out.

I talked to a couple guys and we are heading up to Logandale to do Rock Bottom and then Bronco Falls. Some pretty tuff trails. I was hoping for a big snow storm to hit us this evening and then all day tomorrow which would have made a killer New Years Day snow run with the family up to Angels Peak area. But looks like the government decided to change the weather on us again.
We are meeting up at the Speedway at about 0915 and depart at 0930. Going to be an all day run.

I was told that Gass Peak Loop would be a good first run for me- anyone else have any thoughts, or plans to make a run?

Gas Peak is a long and easy trail, plan on coming back out the same way you go in, the only way to go all the way thru is to get permission from Nellis, the east end of the trail dumps out into the shooting range near Range Rd. and the east end of the 215. In order to actually get up to Gas Peak you have to park and hike to the top of the trail now, they created a parking area and trail head to keep people from driving up and destroying the side of the mountain.

Thanks guys- sounds like Rock Bottom and Bronco Falls are far beyond what I'd be comfortable or ready to do on my first trip out, so I'll keep an eye out for something more appropriate for a complete newbie like myself.

Also thanks for the additional info on Gass Peak too Raythom- I checked out a video on YouTube, and that looks like a good first run for my son and I without any significant grade or obstacles.

I was also going to ask how you like your Cobra 75 CB. Did you install it yourself?

Fyi, the Cobra 75 doesnt have long range transmission capability, it works good on the trail. I wouldn't recommend it for anything other than short range communications, 1 mile or less.

Bitter Springs Trail out near Valley of Fire is also a great starter run for anyone. It's mostly gravel with a few small rocky areas that can be done bone stock in a sport if you stay on trail. It's where I take everyone when I teach a class and they've all enjoyed it. The area is really pretty and it takes a few hours then leads you out to the main road at Lake Mead.

Looks like I'm out for tomorrow. My buddy is in the hospital waiting for his first child to come on out and say hello so I told him I would take his call at work for the rest of the week. So if there is something very local with great cell service I can't make it sorry guys

I'd really love to take a class locally, never been off-road or used a wench before. Do you have info on any upcoming classes that I could participate in?

I actually just made a thread about an upcoming class! We're going to be doing a run on the 17th to Bitter Springs.

Damn auto-correct on my iPhone. I guess Apple thinks it's more likely to have a wench than a winch. 😜(LOL- I do know the difference!)

Sadly, I'm still somewhat inexperienced with both wenches and winches still. Been off the pavement a couple times now, but haven't used the winch yet. I'd like to have someone show me the basics as the weather warms up though.

AMW, I read and chuckled, wife said "what?", I read it to her, she laughed too. My advice, focus on the winch.
