Trip Report - Mt Wilson Backcountry Byway

Margie, me, and the Blaze (our Golden Retreiver) packed up the RV and headed into Lincoln county to do a bit of exploring. We'd never been in the Pioche area, but we will certainly go back for another visit when we have more time.

Our first thought was to stay at Cathedral Gorge State Park...

Nice place, but we decided to head on up the road to Spring Valley State Park...

We decided to take the 80+ mile Mt Wilson Backcountry Byway. This trip actually starts at Pioche with 20 some miles of asphalt, then about 60 miles of fairly good gravel. If you go when wet, this could be a very interesting drive as previous ruts in the road attest. We saw no other cars, but we did pass 7 motorcycles total on the Byway. The road winds through valleys and over ridges with expansive views. It is REMOTE!

I suppose most folks don't take the "business route" through Pioche, but by staying on the highway, you miss a lot!

Next trip we've located some great dispersed campsites, but the state park campground makes for a good place to explore from and we will definitely be heading back to Lincoln county!

Sounds like a good trip, we love that area. I recognize some of the places in your pics. My extended family and friends reserve the group campground at Echo Dam 1-2 times per year. I have done a lot of fishing but no wheeling in that area. Will need to explore.

Last week were through Pioche on our way to Ely. We stopped and had lunch at the Silver Cafe and went on. I'd love to do that Mount Wilson loop, have to figure out logistics.
