I saw this earlier today. It’s amazing what people can do when they don’t think before acting. I can’t imagine that Cohoes doesn’t have an open burning law. Now we all know why.

I drove by the area today. What a mess. A fire in the same place happened in 1988. I dont know if you remember the fire in Cohoes/Waterford,the Shelter Enterprises. That was crazy.

I definitely don’t remember that fire. I moved up to this area from Delaware for work in ‘09. I wonder who will cover the cost of rebuilding.

I assume the city’s insurance will be covering that cost.

I’m also betting that the guy who started the fire is going to do some time in prison.

What a shame. Where I live EVERYBODY has a burn barrel. ( rural, no trash pick up ). It's terrifying to say the least and stinks up a square mile each time one is lit. Several fires locally, within a few hundred yards from burn barrels. Two house fires from embers and a brush fire. Any way, what an idiot. Highly unlikely he will do time. In most states you can kill someone with a car by being an idiot and do no time if there is not a DUI involved. In many cases the motorists gets a $100 fine, for killing someone.

He actually got out on $15,000 bail and "Police charged the man, 51-year-old John Gomes, with fourth-degree arson and reckless endangerment."
