7/20/17 Eagle Rock Adventure

I coming to Colorado Springs on business the week of July 16th 2017 and want to take an airport rental JKU to Eagle Rock. I'd love for a local(s) to show me around and have a tow strap and/or winch. If you think I'd be a trail tampon, I'm willing to hit a lighter scenic trail nearby but I have been studying eagle rock and believe I can do it with the most capable rig in the world: a rental.

I'm a 21 year Jeep veteran with 32 years ATV experience. This will be my first time wheeling outside of the East Coast. Looking forward to a new challenge and I'm not afraid of the skinny pedal. I'll grab lunch and will bring some craft brews for anyone who wants to help me experience Colorado.

I hope it's a big rental, buy the insurance and beat the hell out of it. Now I'm waiting for Sinister6's opinion. This will be good

Check out Red Cone if you want another awesome CO trail. It would be challenging, but probably doable in a stock rental Jeep. Should be open by mid July, and you won't find much better views.

Not sure if it's an option or not but you should go on Turo and see what your options are for Jeeps. I had a buddy who was out last year and ended up renting a JKU with a 3" lift and flat fenders.

If you have never wheeled out here before, I'd take that Jeep to a more scenic high altitude trail, like Mosquito Pass between Alma and Leadville for example. It's pretty easy to get there from Colorado Springs, has some technical difficulty, but won't hurt that stock Jeep.

We plan on driving up pikes peak one day to soak in some race heritage and 14,000 ft views. The wife's letting me have a day to wheel so I'm trying to stay closer to Colorado Springs and am not terribly concerned about wheeling the most scenic trail around.

Both Red Cone and mosquito pass look like awesome trails but they would take me two hours to get to and two hours back not counting trail time.

I'd rather spend that time on a trail pulling winch cable or stacking rocks

Eagle Rock and Saran Wrap are not stock trails period. These trails have morphed into serious locker required, expect some damage butt kickers. Last fall a buddy with a Yota on 37's had his truss break on the front axle. It took 2 full days in rain, snow, mud, lugging a welder, generator and trailer ramps to inch him down and I do mean INCH him down! And once we started this process it became apparent that he knew his rig had issues and he had no business doing these trails.
A stock JKU has absolutely no business running either trail. As many of you know, I'll help anyone stuck on a trail with a legitimate break but if you're going to attempt either trail in a stock rig...you are on your own!

If you want to experience true rock crawling, I'm sure we can get you an open seat to ride along. Several of us are in the Springs and can get you out.

I would like to be in on the run with EdJonesJeeper. A guy from North Carolina wanting to come out and run a stock rental Jeep in Colorado for the first time? How many of us locals can get together and have a great time! China Wall? The Gulches? I'm sure Sinister and Doc911 will be in on this...great guys to wheel with!

Great info and exactly what I needed to hear. What trail would you recommend for a half day+ out of Colorado Springs?

Gulches, great views & Terrain. China Wall - well, stock pick ups can do it with a spotter.
It really depends if you want to ride or drive a rental.

I'm willing to take the rental as far as it will go. China wall looks perfect and a good location from my hotel. I'll get out and winch bitch when the trail starts denting rockers. Come on guys we can't let stock pickup trucks claim the trail.

Who can come on that Thursday?

I'll be picking up the rental on Saturday and later in the week looks the driest.

Who else can come?

Dang, I'd be in if it weren't for being a week out from Ouray. Oh And a broken ring gear that 'll be working on. LOL (Thanks for the hand Mike).

That Sunday the 23rd I could do but I'm in the middle of a weeks vacation in Montana and have the Colorado Wrangler Forum Mototcycle ride Saturday the 22nd. I'm not able to take anymore time off of work during the week. I really wanted to go on this run too.

I'll be back on a plane by Friday.

I didn't get a rental JKU...they were out

Guess I'll have to settle for this 2017 WK2.

I still want to find some rocks to scratch Wednesday or Thursday.

I would love to see the faces of the rental place when you bring it back covered in mud and dirt! Classic!
