Ocala National Forest December trail ride

Since a few people expressed interest in running some trails in ONF together I figured I'd start now so we have some time to figure a plan.
So anyone interested, post up some ideas and well run with it.

I'm thinking late December, the weather should be mild enough, and the trails dry to make for a fun day for Jeeps of different mod levels.

I'm out of town the last part of December, but the idea sounds great.

Nothing specific, it's open to suggestions, and we can narrow from there. There's miles of trails, and I haven't come close to running maybe 1/8 of them. If you have any ideas or suggestions, please share. We can figure out where to meet up and which trails to run.

biggest issue in Dec is hunting season. could even do Paisley Woods (just east of Altoona) , nice trail through forest and lunch on lake. Nothing hard. More challenging areas in the main forest if that is what you are looking for.

That's a possibility. Looks like the south east corner of the forest?

Been in FL for 20+ years and never hit up Ocala. This sounds fun.

yes, East of Altoona. You can also get into the area north side, starting near Alexandar Springs.
here are some photos, maps, etc. from a trip we did earlier this year.
hope this helps

Thanks for sharing that. I haven't run through that part of the forest yet. Been planning on heading down that way eventually.

let me put together a possible run, we could start in Pasiley then work over to the main forest after lunch. Similar to the one I posted. Would be an easy run for those not experienced in off roading, while seeing some nice areas of the forest. If anyone has other suggestions, now is the time

That sounds like a good date.
Guess we find a meeting spot? Never been in the area as well.
If anyone can point me to hotel/motel in area it would help. Would drive up Friday afternoon from SFLA.

The only ones I know of near the forest are in Silver Springs. I'm sure someone more familiar with the area can suggest someplace.

SR40 basically splits the forest into north and south areas. Easiest spots on SR40 for hotels will be Ocala/Silver Springs (west edge of forest) and Ormond Beach @I95 ( 30 min east of the forest). Deland is a good staging point for going into the south east portion of the forest. There are several hotels around the city.

I'm not even sure I will be back in time for the ride, but I will help with logistics as much as I can.

US Forest maps...

all, Sorry 29th does not work for me, but I have added to my dropbox (link below) maps for Ocala and Pasiley woods. You can then use these as they show all the trails in the area that you can ride.

Please Note couple items.
1) when you come across a pond or water, always make certain you have the tree line between you and the water. Otherwise it can damage the pond/lake. A number of areas have been closed to everyone because of this.
2) stay on numbered trails

hope everyone uses their Jeeps to enjoy the forest (and not the otherway around). Ocala used to have more open land, but large sections have been closed because poor or lack of land stewardship by trail users.

wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable ride!

I'll be up there next weekend, 12/8 weekend if anyone wants to meet up for a ride.

I am picking up a bumper from someone in Orlando that weekend so I figured might as well make a trip out of it. Is Hard Rock Off-road Park open? We can do trails in Ocala Saturday and Hard Rock Off-road Park Sunday. Or just Ocala both days.

I so want to do this, but I won't be here the end of the year. I've been wanting to hit trails since I haven't really since I've had my jeep. I've gone through tiger bay and some ga mud. That's it. I know, such a sin!

I have an all stock jeep so I can't do those extreme trails. If anyone don't mind meeting up and running some trails I can do and teach me as well. That would be bloody fantastic!! It'll be great to have some friends to do this with.

Also, any places to do trails at night? I'm near the Daytona Beach area. I know Ocala seems like the nearest place for great trails.

Are the trails mark at Ocala or is it more of, "look, a road, lets drive on that?" Or do you have to get in from the park? Are the trails free, pay, mix depending on which one?

@Raziel Usually if it's an open ride being discussed publicly like this it will be for all experience levels. If the trail required speciality equipment or experiance it would be said, and usually those are planned on smaller club boards or privately.

I'm in Ft. Laud so I don't know anything about what's local to you for night rides.

Ocala National Forest is a forest, not a park. It does have rules, and there are trails and maps.

You can do either way, the last time I was in ONF it was with group that was very casual and they just kinda drove around the trails whichever way. It was basically a scenic tour around the forest on a mix of sand roads, dirt roads, and trails. (not quite a road, more a path in the dirt.)

Another time I went with more experienced medium level guys and they had a planned path with specific obstacles to hit. We actually stayed just outside of the grounds of the forest proper for most of the wheeling. This trip was more technical and the experienced guys were spotting for the rest of us. While I vaguely remember the area I would not feel confident leading a group there myself.

There is also Hard Rock Off Road Park just outside ONF as well. It has been a few years since I've been there but I'd love to go again. It is pay to enter, but it's not expensive and the trail is loop and each obstacle has a bypass incase you can't or don't want to attempt it. I think it is a great place to start learning technique.

Anyway, check out OrlandoTJ's post. He gave info about it and shared the maps about the area.

OK, so back to the on main topic, here is what I'm thinking....

It is cool enough that we can camp in the one of the forest camping areas. We need to have an idea of how many we have we can set-up camping or hotel reservations.

I'm in FT Laud and I'd come up Friday and leave Sunday. If anyone else is down for Hard Rock on Sunday we can do that too.

Proposed itinerary-
Dates; Dec 28th/29th/30th
Dec 28th;
- Ride up and set-up camp/hotel
Dec 29;
- Meet-up 9:00am @ TBA for group breakfast
- Around 10:00 we depart and (more or less) follow the PasileyWoods Trip plan OrlandoTJ posted for us.
- Picnic lunch on the trail when we hit Lake Door
- Once we hit 19 we head to group dinner @ TBA
Dec 30th;
-Meet-up 8:30am @ TBA for group breakfast
- 9:30am we depart Hard Rock Off Road Park (They open at 10am)
- Picnic lunch on the trail
- leave around 2:00pm

If this work for everyone let's get the headcount of who is in so we can make the reservations.
Possible headlight count; @Ghost JK @Snag002 @386GreyWanderer @DIRT BOY @JeepGuy425

Please copy and past the following to confirm if you are coming, which days (), and your vote for camp/motel/self (Put self if you do not wanna do a group camping nor stay at the motel the group picks.) By next Friday, Dec 7th, based on headlightcount for who wants to camp and who wants to motel we will select the site and make arrangments.

--------------------------------
Confirmed headlight count;
LoganDzwon - 28-29-30 - prefer camp

Still not sure if I will be back in town. Will not know for a couple of weeks, so if I go it will be a last minute confirmation.

If you are on FB, do a search for Volusia Jeep Club. They are pretty active and do a lot of trail rides around ONF.
