Ocala National Forest trails and outings

Thought I would start a new thread as there are several of us discussing specific questions about running the trails in the Ocala National Forest (ONF) in the bowels of a defunct thread about a defunct Jeep club..

I will post here the next time we are going out and all who are interested can post here and we will make arrangements to meet up. I suggest others do the same.

Here is a google map of where I have explored so far:

Not all stars are off road destinations as some are bars, restaurants and boat launches.

There are also some specific 4wd trails in the southern part of the forest... here's maps: FL4WDA Discussion Forum - Tread Lightly 4WD Way (GPS and Maps) I'd be up for exploring these (but not until next month).

Here are links to USGS Topographical maps in geo-indexed PDF files. I use a map APP called PDF maps by Avenza Systems on my android tablet.

USDA Forest Service FSGeodata Clearinghouse - FSTopo Map Images

Here is a link to the US Forest Service Motor Vehicle Use Map 2015:

http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_...prd3829924.pdf

This was a bit disappointing to use and clearly marked roads/trails have been taken out of service without comment or signage using bull-dozers.

I still think that the satellite view from Google maps is the most helpful but these links should get you to the right areas.

OK, I would be interested in getting a small group together in May. My schedule is pretty open right now so pick a weekend and we can pencil it in.

regards,

The best areas we found out there was around the bombing range and off the Centennial trail. There's a few nice fun spots you just have to look for them. Some trails off hwy 19 going south toward paisley were pretty good too. We found most of the trails north of 40 and Juniper were boring and narrow.

Have you tried road (trail) 46 ? West of 19 on 40 turn right on 33 (dirt road) go 5 moles or so, turn left on 46. Some interesting trails back there. Follow 46 for 8 or 10 miles. Some semi deep muddy spots & a cool sandpit area.

I'm still interested, but I'm not going to open my mouth and commit to anything yet - I've got a lot of home projects to get done in the next couple of weeks.

Jeep Camping

Thanks for this thread. Any good suggestions on spots to take the Jeep offroad and then do some dispersed camping (Ocala's word for backcountry)?

Hey PolarbearJK,

Sorry about abandoning this thread last year got caught up in buying/outfitting my Teardrop camper.

Did have a great time in Utah, Colorado and Idaho though..

Please do not hesitate to PM me in the future or now and I will give you my cell and/or email.

I will be going to the beach in the near term and back into the Forest towards the end of March/early April.
