2020 Rubicon Recon

JL Wrangler Forums broke news of a Recon package being offered on 2020 Rubicons.

Unlike the original Recon, this JL iteration looks to be more of an appearance package with some Mopar parts thrown in, and less unique hardware.

Here are the specs:

Old Dogger and Cobra5.4 like this.

Unlike the original Recon, which included a beefier from axle and diff covers, the focus on this one appears to be mostly cosmetic.

Sales must be running behind expectations to be slapping a black grille, matte stickers and red seatbelts onto a Rubicon this early in the game.

Really shouldn’t be a surprise. All the JL special editions (from JK equivalent) have been sticker packages so far.

The Freedom and Willys editions for JL did not get an optional rear locker or lower gearing like JK did.

I like the appearance but it's very disappointing that it's purely a sticker package like the MOAB was and not unique in any way.

I dig it! If at any point it comes in a 2-door manual with the Pentastar motor, I will seriously consider placing an order.

So, it's $2755 more than a regular rubicon but for your $2755 you get standard;

Steel bumpers - normally $1295
Wheel Upgrade - normally $995
LED light group - normally $795
Color matched fenders - normally $495
Enhanced Rock Rails - normally $495 (i think)
Bumper hoop - normally $195 (i think)
Trail gear bag - normally $295

That adds up to more than $2755 plus you get the special badges/decals.

Seems like an alright deal if you were going to add most of those things to a regular Rubicon anyways.

  • The black grille is +$300 —of course it doesn’t cost FCA nearly that much, especially since it would be eschewing the painted grille which likely costs more
  • I don’t think this package includes the painted fenders.
  • The wheels in this package are not the optional Rubicon off-road wheels; they look more like the wheels standard on JT Rubicon.
  • Doesn't the regular Rubicon come with the trail bag?

The enhanced rock rails are closer to a thousand, so it's an even better deal. Does "2.0 BSG" engine mean it's the Belt Start Generator version that's not available on 2020 Rubis? I'm currently looking for a 2019 Rubi instead of the 2020 because I actually want BSG to smooth out the stop start, so this is pretty interesting to me...

Description says "body color surrounds" which i think means the fenders. Also, the pic shows the fenders the same silver as the body. That's what led me to believe the fenders are color matched.

My Rubicon did not come with the trail bag.

What's with the black fender vent?

I guess when you've overpriced your only cash cow, you're left with distasteful sticker packages.

You can order a black grill on the 2020 Rubicon...

Who needs the rest of that crap... perhaps with exception to the loop?

Just turn off the start/stop with a third party plug-in. I cannot remember the name of the one I got but it sure works great. It holds my choice of stop/start or just keep running. Someone else might remember the name of the product.

The “body-color surrounds” refers to the body-color moldings around the black grille. The grille surrounds are black on the new Willys; they are color-matched on Rubicons.

Yes, I know, that sounds pathetic. But goes to show how ridiculous Jeep has become with its sticker editions.

Saw it’s on the website now to build. I had assumed the 2.0 BSG was just standard and the 3.6 would be an additional cost like normal... but It’s only available with the 2.0?! Talk about pushing CAFE hard.

We’re only 3 model years in on a 10-year product life cycle. Have to wonder if a 6-cylinder will survive another 7 years in the Wrangler.

I liked it until I saw the 3.6 and the diesel were not available as options. Thought the same thing, FCA is really pushing that 2.0L. I really liked the fact that they did away with the red dash panels.

Yeah. 2019 figures shows that FCA sales keep concentrating on gas guzzlers: Grand Cherokee, Gladiator, Ram and Charger sales were up; Renegade, Compass, Cherokee, Fiat, Alfa Romeo were all down double digits. Wrangler was down 5%, but still above JK, in part because plant capacity for JL/JT is now double what it was for JK.

If FCA struggled meeting CAFE regulations in recent years, it will get even tougher in 2019 - 2020; it’s going to cost them millions in fines.

According to the Jeep.com builder, as of this morning the price of the 4-door Recon is now $4,060 over the standard Rubicon: $46,380 vs $42,320!

So Recon is now a value package that offers no value.

What a joke.

So the "add-ons" that carry a price tag look like Front/Rear steel bumpers, LED light package, Bumper Hoop and the upgraded side rails ? I mean stickers are Muispensive too

2-door is $38,625 vs $41,380 (a premium of $2,755 as advertised)

Looks like the problem is misleading advertising. They promote Recon as a $2,755 package (lowest price) and show a picture of their most popular model (4-door) which actually costs more.

So, 4 extra inches of rock rail on each side of the 4 door is an extra $1305? That seems kind of crazy.

CAFE is tough on companies like Jeep. What else is there to offer. They keep getting smaller and smaller. Soon there'll be a SMART jeep version that gets 85 mpg. haha.

According to the order guide, this is what is included.

Quote:
PACKAGE CONTENT
17X7.5 MACHINED/PAINTED BLACK WHLS (WGQ)
97 MPH VEHICLE MAX SPEED CALIBRATION (JJ2) BLACK / BODY COLOR GRILLE (MYV)
DAYTIME RUNNING LAMP LED ACCENTS (LPY) FALKEN BRAND TIRES (TZJ)
FRONT LED FOG LAMPS (LNV)
HEAVY DUTY ROCK SLIDER W/STEP ASSIST (MMU)
INSTRUMENT PNL BEZELS-BODY COLOR (JEG)
JEEP TRAIL RATED KIT (XWX)
LED LIGHTING GROUP (AD6)
LED REFLECTOR HEADLAMPS (LPX) LED TAILLAMPS (LAY)
LT285/70R17C BSW M/T TIRES (TWG) MOPAR BUMPER HOOP (MYL)
MOPAR HINGE-GATE REINFORCEMENT (XDB) RECON BADGE (MTC)
RECON DECALS (MYB) RECON PACKAGE (ACC) RED SEAT BELTS (CGQ)
STEEL BUMPER GROUP (AST) STEEL FRONT BUMPER (MC6) STEEL REAR BUMPER (MD6)
The big ticket items are the steel bumpers ($1395), the hinge-gate reinforcement ($675), and the LED lights ($1095).That results in about a $550 savings.

However, it comes with the Falken M/T without a BFG K02 option, the turbo-4 without a v6 or diesel option. The dash also seems to have different (and IMHO nicer) trim. Caveat: the rings around the dials and vents are body-colored, which may or may not be a good thing.

With the JK Rubicon packages included a vented hood which is an expensive aftermarket add-on because of the cost of painting and fitting a new hood. And the hoods are expensive anyway. With the JL, all Rubicons have vented hoods.

The MMU rock rail with its little step is only available on the Rubicon in the Recon package. It is a $975 option on the Sport and Sahara. The MEF rock rail is standard on the Rubicon, Willys, and Willys Sport.
