Buying new JL Rubicon

Hey everyone,

I'm in the process of trading in my JK for a new JL Rubicon. I was wondering if there was anything specific I should look out for from the dealership in case they try to pull a fast one on me. It's my first time buying a car without my parents around to help and I figured I would go to the pro's this time and see if you guys had any tips.

Thanks!

I had my dealer slip in window etching for 395. They claimed "we do it to all our vehicles so you just need to sign". I was so excited to finally have my JL I didn't realize they were charging for it... I know stupid

Research what others are paying in your area. Decide what options you want and what your bottom line price will be. THEN STICK TO IT. Keep the emotion of owning that shiny new Jeep out of your negotiations!

Be careful, very careful. If you have a friend/relative with vehicle buying experience take them with you. As stated above, the "dealer packages" are just one of many up sells the dealers tack on. Etched glass, rust proofing, windshield protection, tire and wheel protection, 3rd party extended warranty and more. Plus high interest rates when you actually qualify for lower rates. The final closing with the F&I person can be very high pressure to add these extras. I took delivery two weeks ago of a JLUS I ordered. No financing involved and I signed the paperwork the day I ordered it. When I picked it up there was a "dealer add on window sticker" for $895.00 for wheel locks, nitrogen filled tires and all weather floor mats, which it already had. Since I had already done the deal this cost me nothing. However if I hadn't signed already or bought it from stock it would have been a different story. I guess the PDI department didn't know mine was a presold vehicle. Bottom line, take your time, do your homework, negotiate online or on the phone before going to the dealer, don't sign anything without reading it thoroughly and be prepared to walk away and let things cool off if things don't look right.

@Jeepsforkeeps Thanks! My biggest issue right now is that it seems like the dealer is pushing me around. I originally was going to just get a sport but he wanted a ridiculous amount (compared to the sport I just had), same for the Sahara. I finally came to the Rubicon because after going back and forth we were able to come to a reasonable price. The issue right now is that they claim "the car is in transit and they don't know where it is." I don't really buy that, how do you not know where a $45K car is?! The whole process has me all kinds of annoyed.

Demand a VIN #
If they won't give it to you, walk away as fast as you can.

@pcardoza I got the vin number. What happened was they were gonna sell me a Sahara at $46K but online later that week I found the Rubicon for $1K cheaper so we switched to that (the Sahara and the Rubicon were not on site). The last we heard anything was that on March 25 the Rubicon was "in transit". He said that he marked if off so that it would be delivered to his dealership and that it was essentially mine. Its just every time I ask for an update or anything he says he has no idea where the car is or when it'll arrive.

I'm really looking more for information of what I should be on the look out for when the car arrives to try and drive the price down. I'm a little fed up with the guy, he's been ducking my calls and when I leave messages he doesn't return my call. So if I can find a way to to look at the car when it arrives and try to get a little lower than I'd do that. Or if anyone has advice on what not to get if its offered when the car arrives (like the window etching previously mentioned) let me know!

They're facing shipping delays right now. My custom ordered JLUR has been in "shipping" status now for 28 days. My dealer has no idea when it will arrive. Arrival date is TBD. :-(

RP, have you contacted other dealers as well. It pays to shop around. Don't know if I would want to deal with a dealer who is dodging your calls during the selling process. Imagine what they will do after they get your check.

@ztman I would go shop around other places but I already out a down payment down to assure that they wouldn't accidentally sell it to someone else if it and when it comes in

Hey RubiconBound, I was curious where the list came from? It was pretty big. I'm close to Mansfield, but I've been talking with another local dealer who is telling me that the new JLs are selling at MSRP. Think I'm going to try to reach out to this dealer and ask them. So just mention this Mortimer huh?

Just google it. There are price guides on this forum and the JL Wrangler forum, It's from people who've bought their JL's for that price. There are even bigger lists then that FYI. That was just the one I remembered where it was.

Just look at the Station Jeep web site. They're listing JLU's with discounted pricing before negotiations!

Also, if they "upgrade" any parts: sidesteps, bigger tires, whatever...make sure you get credit for the OEM parts they upgraded. A lot of folks don't realize they should only pay the difference and pay the whole thing. Watch out for the proverbial extended warranties too...most are junk.

No extras. Nothing. Shop the price you got to bother dealerships and see if they can beat it, odds are someone will, and may even have something in stock, but make sure it's a legit, apples to apples comparison with the features you want.

If you are financing go to a credit union and get approved for a loan with a good rate. When in the finance office for the dealer, thats the rate they have to beat if they want the finance business. Also, consider selling your jeep private party and take it to carmax for an appraisal. At the dealer you will be armed with a rate they have to beat, a trade in appraisal they have to beat and a rough idea of what your old jeep will go for if you sold it on auto trader or craigslist. Personally I would never trade a Jeep wrangler. Too easy to sell on craigslist.

Update!

I went to a different dealership and got the same Rubicon in white instead of red for $10 a month cheaper! Got sick of waiting around at the other place. Thanks for the advice everyone!

The final price was about $500 more than the Firecracker Red one I looked at from the first dealer. It came with the same features and the only difference was the color. They were able to buy back my current Jeep and because of that they were able to offer me a better deal.
