New JL or lightly used JK

I have been shopping for a Jeep for several months. With all the problems with the JLís electric system I have just about decided to get a lightly used JK.
Less complicated electrical system.

What's your reason for trading? Mine was 111K miles and some long term concerns about dropping money I could put toward a new one. I was going to go to the grave with my 2014 JKU, but the JT I just bought rides so much better and has so many more amenities, it was an easy call. Now I won't go back! The late JK's are basically the same as your 2012, so other than miles, you'll be getting the same rig. That being said, there's nothing wrong with that idea, I was just ready for a change. Either way, just do the research and get a good deal!

Made the mistake of trading the 2012 off for a pickup. Now I want a Jeep back.

Have you test drove a JL yet? That could help your decision either way.

I just went through this, I drove a 17' JK Rubicon Unlimited under 10k miles, ran great but felt like I was pushing it. Drove several JL Rubicons and the difference is night and day, I ended up buying a like new loaded 2019 Rubicon with V6 8spd auto. As for electrical issues I believe most of has been programing although mine has been perfect knock on wood.

If it’s any consolation, I traded a 2018 Recon for a 2019 Tacoma pickup. Hated the truck; three months later I was shopping for a Wrangler.

At first I was open to JKs and JLs. After driving a few I focused on getting a JL. Made an offer on a used 2018 JL Sahara with 17,000 miles but backed out at the last minute.

Luckily, found a leftover NEW 2018 JL Sahara with V6 and Selec-Trac priced to move. Got that one three months ago. I’m glad I got a JL this time.

For me it's just the $$$$. My JKUR is loaded and basically done. with only 48 K on it I can drive it another 5 years @ 6K miles a year easy. I know the JL is really better in every way but the complicated electronics bother me a little for now. The time will come but it's not now. Who knows, next might not be a Wrangler.

There's problems with the JL electrical system? What problems? Maybe you should consider a 1972 Plymouth. No electronics there...

I had my dream Jeep for a few years. 2014 JKURX. I did all the work except balance the tires. I loved my Jeep. I sold it to my daughter in a moment of weakness. This forced me to do the whole evaluate the JL bit. I drove many JLs as rental cars for months.

I now own a 2020 JLUR and am very pleased with it. Be sure to check into some of the really new options like proximity locks, and LiDAR cruise control.

Take this with a grain of salt, last June I bought my first wrangler ever it's a jlu sport, got close to 11000 km on it, and so far all the electrical has been good, this also coming from adding a 600watt amp with dual subs, winch, a hard wired dash camera. Before the jlu i had a17 cameo 2ss, within the first year of owning had to replace the starter, some times it would randomly turn off or not start after about 2 to 3 minutes. Over all i love the wrangler my only regret is not being able to afford a Rubicon

Iíve had a 12/15/17, two sport S and a JKR. All were manual and all had transmission issues the first year. Rebuilds failures etc. Got out of the 17 and into a loaded out Tacoma. Hate the way it drives at any speed over 55. Shifts non stop. Going back to a Jeep shortly, but JL issues Iíve heard about make me leery. Iím gonna go the JL since you can get one around the same price as a Jk.

Ha! I’ve owned:

2008 JK Sahara
2009 JK Rubicon
2009 JKU Rubicon (rear ended)
2012 JKU Rubicon
2013 JK Rubicon
2014 JKU Sahara
2015 JKU Sahara
2018 JKU Rubicon Recon
2018 JLU Sahara

This time I plan to hold onto my 2018 JLU for as long as I can. Prices —and resale values— are too out of whack to keep spending money on Jeeps like a drunken soldier.

Think of this,, in Calif you would pay about 10% sales tax on the total price no matter of trade in om all those vehicles and new the reg is about 2% . That's what keeps me in my 2014.

In Arizona we pay the tax on the difference off the trade-in. But, I like my 14 JKU, keeps getting better every day with new mods. I got more $$$ into mods than I paid for the vehicle new and itís got 24K miles. I have a new Merc for around town and out-of-town business.

If I had the money,,,, With all the improvements on the JL, trans, CAD, 8.4, stronger ft diff, better MPG, and possibly better ride this would be the time to move on it. Or, just keep what ya got and live with it.

Not my thing, but I collect other things. I have only 5 purchased vehicles in the last 20 years. Which actually isnít bad, that averages to 1 every 4 years. Not going to count the 23í boat and 2 campers.

I am glad I wasn't bitten by the JL bug, because had I driven one, I might not have waited for the Gladiator, and traded my 2014 JKU more quickly. Curious to see what the OP decides...

For my part, had a 2015 Rubicon Jk get totaled, just got a 2018 JL Rubicon and I love the upgrades. No issues yet. I'm glad I went for something different rather than just try to reclaim my lost love.
