R.I.P. the Diesel

So a month ago our dealership had FCA Customer Relationship training and we got on the subject of the chance of seeing the diesel wrangler for 2020. We were told to many issues with the EPA, doubt we will get it.

Then this week we get Ram 1500 training and find out the V6 ecodiesel isn't being offered in 2019's due to EPA reasons. Got a hearty laugh when we asked about the 3.0L diesel in the wrangler...

Very sad...

Thank you for sharing.

Offering a diesel is becoming a riskier business proposition by the day.

Sad indeed.

yes, very sad... I was trying to be hopeful it was going to be offered in a 2 door.

I thought the 2018 has a turbo diesel option... did I mis-read that?

Thanks for the insight. Sad, however with most of the small diesel’s have been found to contain software cheating the emissions it’s not surprising. Heck, even Chrysler/FIAT is part of the scandal. I waited for years on the diesel wrangler, then in 2015 I got tired of waiting and ordered one, glad I did.

Slightly off topic, wonder if it will come with the Jeep TrucK? Folks over on another forum seem to believe it will exist.

Kinda seems like it is a dark cloudy dream that has fallen on def ears.

I'd kill for a turbodiesel in my JK. I want TORQUE!

But Dieselgate killed that. Instead we'll be getting a plug-in hybrid JL for 2020.

I doubt FCA will certify the diesel for use on the pickup and not the SUV.

I think everyone is under the impression the diesel is coming...until there’s an official announcement to the contrary.

I know there is still plans to run the diesel in the JL/JT. Obviously that could change but our system at work was just updated last week with new part numbers specific to those models as designated by FCA.

I hope it comes out eventually.

Per last conversation with the good folks at Jeep, the diesel is still on track for 2019, no changes that I am aware of. half doors, well that is a topic for another day..

I'm sure the diesel is still on it's way for the JL/JT...now the question of it being worth what appears to be the standard $4500 markup is debatable. No way in hell I'd pay that much for one, but that's just me.

I wouldn't pay that much for it. From what I've read and heard the VM diesel isn't the greatest diesel engine either. Maybe they got it all straightened out? I'm not quite sure yet. If I were in the market and willing to pay up for one, I'd wait to see just how good they are in a Wrangler.

My feeling is that the chances of the JK getting a factory diesel are now pretty much non-existent.

Haha, I think you are correct!

Well, some money bags will dump a $20k + conversion in to his JK, so he can fill up at the green handled pump and woo the audience.

I don't understand the desire for a diesel in a JL. They're not heavy towing vehicles, and never will be. Diesel fuel used to be a lot cheaper than gas, but hasn't been for years. Also, anyone who lives in a climate which gets below freezing temperatures in winter knows how much diesels hate the cold and show it by not starting. I must be missing something. Even with all of the pick-ups I've had I never wanted a diesel, to buy new they are 10,000 more where I am, and cost more to repair when they are off warranty. I don't get it.

i had a diesel rabbit, then a 99.5 vw jetta turbo diesel. in those years i was putting 25k on the jetta. cold winters in the midwest and not once did it freeze up. sold it to a friends daughter who drove it for ten more years(17 in total). kind of missed it when i would see it

We have a 2.0L turbo gas engine that is starting to hit the dealerships. Jeepinformant on youtube posted a video the day his dealership got one in.

The [email protected] 48 volt battery back is under the jeep with a nice square face on the factory "skid" waiting for the first rock...

That low-end torque diesels are known for works very well on the trail. As does a 500-mile range when you are planning a trip to cross the Mojave desert without a fuel station in sight.

But I am with you. I recently got a chance to drive a Chevrolet Colorado 4x4 with the diesel and gasoline V6 side-by-side: the diesel was a lot more money, much noisier, rougher and sluggish. By comparison the gasoline version was responsive, quiet, smooth and refined; felt like a Cadillac.

Let痴 face it, Wrangler is not a very refined vehicle; not even in JL form. And already way overpriced. So for my day-to-day use, I値l take a gasoline Wrangler over a diesel.
