To trade or not to trade

So I am looking to get a 2018 loaded JLUR 4 door, auto with the 3.6 and 8k miles on it. I have one picked out and I really like it. When I drove up to the dealer they where really interested in my TJ. I have had this Jeep for 15 years. It's an X, manual with, inline 6 and About 135k on it. I had some thoughts that in 12 years when my little bit turns 16 he might want to drive his dad's car. Then again it's an old TJ with power nothing.

So what do you think? Would you keep the old one or trade it in?

P.s. I don't know what they are offering for it yet.

P.s.s do you think that 42k dollars is a good deal for a used JLUR? I think I'll offer 40k and see what happens.

Keep your old one and offer $35. The 20's are already out.

Wondering why it was traded in with only 8k on it. Maybe one of those that they can't seem to get the bugs out of.

I'd keep it. Kids don't need power, it will only get them into trouble. Your kid should be happy to have something to drive.

My son has said he would like a Jeep for his car, but there is no way he is getting mine and he would need to buy his own...he quickly realized his first car would not be a Jeep, cause he didn't want to go as old as he would have to in order to get one for his financial capability.

I’d keep the TJ. Chances are it’s worth to you more than it is to them.

I just spent several weeks shopping for a JLU: $42,000 sounds about right, provided it’s got an automatic, leather, Navi and a couple more goodies. If you get it for $40,000 that’d be a sweet deal. They won’t take $35,000; that’d buy you a JL 2-door Rubicon with soft top, manual transmission and 15,000+ miles.

Good luck!

The fact you asked (I assume) means the $$ aren't a critical factor. Maybe that is an inaccurate assumption But.... If you can - I say keep it.

It's yours, it has been yours. You know the history and the guy who has been driving it - I call that a diamond.

I wish I had one of my old TJ's

As for the JL act like you don't care either way.... the 20's are out. "Make me a deal I can't possibly refuse" is the way to approach them and wait about 21 days for a final offer. (30 days hath November)

Thank you! It's sprayed with Raptor liner that was tinted to PGK Tank, and the fenders/accessories are standard black raptor liner.

Looks like I'm going to keep the Jeep after all. Agree with above that my kid should be happy with any car he gets, especially if free. It'll be a true classic by the time he can drive.

In addition to that the dealer offered me $2500 for it....

$2500 is way too low for that TJ. Iíve seen TJs not even half as nice as yours go for $2500

I wish I had any of my old 4x4's. Like the early Bronco's. Even the 90 Bronco, or the 74 chevy, Or my Dad's 61 CJ5 with the 327. You get my drift,,,, keep it.

Rubis hold their value, especially one with no mods... They will send you packing at a $35k offer.

$40k should get it... maybe just a hair below it.

I'll give you $2600 for that TJ . Wow - that is a seriously insulting offer from the dealer; really nice looking Jeep man.

It's used and 2 years old. If they want to move it, they might take $35. I paid 46K for a loaded 2019 that was brand new. I think 42 for a 2yo used one is too much.

If jeep TJ's in your condition were only $2500 I would have one. Based on their offer of your TJ I would lowball the crap out of them on theirs. I would assume they only paid 28K for it

Just a quick look and I saw TJ's selling prices up to $22,000. I would really lowball the guy.

Don’t forget Wrangler’s strong resale.

On nationwide searches I found lots of loaded NEW JLURs in the mid 40s, discounted from the mid 50s. The USED ones weren’t that much cheaper. Saw four used 2-door JLRs in the mid-to-high 30s. The only JLUR I saw priced in the mid 30s had a salvage title.

A local guy interested in buying my 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road offered his 2004 LJ with 19,000 miles as partial payment. He sent me pics; it looked mint. I was tempted.

When I finally asked how much he wanted for it, he got cold feet.
