What the heck?

We ordered our new JL Sport on 09/02 and were told it would be 6-8 weeks before we could drive it home. On 09/09, we received the vin#, window sticker and the build has moved from D to D1. So, what the heck takes so long if the build happens within two weeks of the order? I tried to do a few searches on the topic here, but have only joined a few days ago, and its been a good while since I belonged to any vehicle owners forums. I am eager to read about the experiences of others when ordering a 2020 JL.

Transporting it from the plant to the dealer. It's typical that it will sit at the rail yard for a few weeks. There was one guy on the Challenger forums, his vehicle was at the rail yard for so long, the dealer had to pull some strings to let him go pick it up and drive it to the dealer.

When I ordered my 15, it took about 7.5 weeks to get to the dealer. Some people here had it take much longer.

Thread moved to JL General.

Hopefully you'll get more answers in this section.

We've ordered twice in the past, 2014 & 2018. The 2014 took 9 weeks total, the 2018 just over 10 weeks. Other's have taken less time, some have taken more time.

D1 means it's scheduled to be built. If you were told 6-8 weeks that's probably about right.
Below are the steps for a JK:

ORDER STATUS CODES
D - firm schedule - dealer has allocation and all parts available
D - 1 gateline schedule - scheduled to be built
E - frame
F - paint
G - trim
I - built not ok'd
J - built ok'd
JB - shipped to body vendor
JE - emission check
JS - shipped to storage
KZ - released by plant , invoiced
KZL - released - not shipped
KZM - first rail departure
KZN - first rail arrival
KZT - second rail departure
KZU - second rail arrival
KZX - delivered to dealer
ZA - canceled

It may very well arrive early... Mine did.
I expected 8-10 weeks. I was in it in three.

Must have been a new record set getting it built and delivered in that time frame.

Little did I know the dealerships GM sister-in-law was the lady in charge of build scheduling. I thought it was a joke when he emailed me "Hey, guess what just arrived".

If anyone ever saw the movie "Defending your Life" it was like when he orders breakfast.

Railroads are wonderful for moving a continent's worth of wheat, corn, soy and coal to the ports.

Unfortunately, they're horrible at getting one item from Point A to Point B on a predictable schedule.

Mine is on a train somewhere right now. That's great and all, but I'm still in the process of selling my JK! So there's that.

That's incredible fast for a "preordered vehicle"
I waited 2 + months for my BMW 3 series in Europe.

My 2015 JK took 6-weeks, which is what I expect on my new JL order, but if it gets here quicker that would be awesome. Day 4 now and Jeep Chat didn't have any info even with my VON so no VIN as of yet.
