Exclamation More Spy Pics, this time with 12-bolt Differential shot

Didn't see anyone post this one yet, TFL got a few spy shots from underneath, and a not very informative inside shot (other than the HP testing laptop [not gear shifter/selector pics])

Is This a 2018 Jeep Wrangler Prototype? Spy Shots Reveal Front Axle and Chassis [Spied] – The Fast Lane Car

While they say that the engine seems different, this model seems to have the same black oilpan of the current Pentastar, whereas the other spy photos had a grey/silver which differently located in the underside of the bay. I think they are incorporating the transmission components as being the 'different' underneath.

The interesting part is the axle pics, this one you can clearly see the bolt pattern, and while the current Dana44 in the Wrangler has 5 lower half bolts, this one has a 6 bolt lower half.

This is more in line with the Chrysler 9.25 pattern than the current Danas. Of course Dana has publically stated that they would be providing the Axles for the new JL and are building a new factory in the old Willys Stickney Ave location, so it's likely a new variant of the Dana platform.

The other thing of interest, is that the control arms seem to be slightly longer (in the side photos on TFL's site), although that could be the angle.

Front view with the standard Dana 30 there it seems (possibly something else, but definitely not D44 [or D60] as not angular enough);

That is what I was thinking. That doesn't look like an oil pan from the 3.6l, and it doesn't look like there is a crossover exhaust pipe.

Someone on this forum posted a spy pic that he took of a covered Wrangler, and there was a crossover pipe on that one. Also the front diff in this pic looks like a standard D30, but the one that the forum member posted was a different front diff, possibly an upgraded D30.

It's called 'Patina', and wouldn't be a Wrangler without it.

No it's very clearly a 3.6L Pentastar. The transmission is definitely the 8-speed. similar to the one in the RAM 1500.

Here is the undershot of the Pentastar with that tell-tale black oilpan and small bump in the middle.

and you can see the integrated cooler of the 8-speed pointed out in the other thread in this pic

And to turnbull's point, that D30 on the top pic (the test Mule) looks more robust than the D30 in the 2016 below it.

Anywhoooo, hat's my analysis of it.

I think you need to look closer. On the JK pic, you can see that bump is located closer to the passenger side, but on the JL pic, it is located closer to the driver's side. Also the JL oil pain is noticeably deeper (from top to bottom) than the JK. The shape is slightly different overall.

Like I said, it might still be the Pentastar, but that is NOT the same oil pan. If it is the Pentastar, then where is the crossover exhaust pipe?

Actually I was saying in this particular photo, it looks like they were using the standard D30 in the JL mule. However, in the thread called "Think I saw the new JL...and pickup version today" in the General Discussion forum, you can clearly see a different front diff than the JK

https://www.wranglerforum.com/f714/th...y-1703282.html

You can also clearly see the crossover exhaust pipe in that photo which is absent from the photo you posted.

I don't disagree that it is slightly different (likely due to the mating with the 8Hxx or it might be the new VVL+EGR variant with a deeper oil pan for more oil capacity/cooling) than the one currently in the setup. Heck even just the difference between the oilpan in the Wrangler vs the Cherokee and RAM is different, as it has a much smaller profile oil pan (likely to avoid being knocked off). But comparing it to the other options (3.0L EcoDiesel, 2.8L CRD, 2.4L tigershark, etc) the layout far better matches that of the Pentastar in my op-onion.

Yeah, but if you look at the differential, it actually looks like the Chrysler 9.25 bolt pattern as you clearly see the 3 bolts on this side of the halfway point, while ALL of the Danas are just 2 bolts from 6 to 9 o'clock. Also the bolt past the middle is at 6:30 while the dana bolts are all closer to 7:15 for orientation if you get what I mean.
That picture in the other thread may be back to front, or that mule may have a Chrysler 9.25 front & rear and be different mules with different engines.
As I mentioned in the other thread, that engine looks more like the EcoDiesel underside to me, while this one from TFL looks like the Pentastar underside. Although it could just be the grainy washed-out-ed-ness from the low-light shot.
I also mentioned I did see that bronze/copper-like exhaust arrangement on a previous spy pic, but can't remember where anymore, but just from that difference alone between exhausts, I have a feeling this may be two separate mules for two different setups, but they both seem to be mated to the 8-speed.

The TFL pics are definitely Chrysler 9.25 Rear and a Dana XX (looks like a 30) front in a Sahara type config, and if that under-carriage shot from the other thread is the front as it seems, then it may get the double treatment, ala Rubicon, which would make sense that it had the diesel.
Now that setup is going to be a bit heavier than two D44HDs but should still be fractionally lighter than two D60s. I would just prefer seeing that 9.25 with a D44 front, not what appears to be a D30, just because I have a feeling that's the Sahara option, and they don't feel the need for the locking front, but I'd rather have the strength of a D44 front even without a locker, just to compliment the 9.25 rear.
