Old Nc 105

Thinking about trying to put together a ride on Old Nc 105 on December 9th. That's what my work schedule will allow as far as weekends, unless it's a Sunday.
105 is a dirt road, ratted out in some places but not too bad overall. Very nice scenery, especially with it being fall. 105 runs along the ridge of Linville Gorge. Lots of places to stop and stretch the legs.
Let me know what you guys think!

Hello to all the Wilson Creek, Hickory and general foothills people. Decided to join the forum after seeing y'alls posts.

I've been on alot of the roads in this area. Went up 105 a while back too many leaves at the time. Took Globe Rd to Blowing Rock about a month ago.

I will have to keep 9 dec in mind.

Bye to way. Got a green 06 Golden Eagle.

I would be interested if we could find a way to lengthen the trip. If I recall correctly 105 is only about 15 miles. Is there anything else linking to it? It would be a long way for me to go for just an hour or two.

Backwoodsbuckeye,
If we are here on December 9th I can add another 45-50 miles of good forest road jeeping to your route. We could meet up with you guys somewhere at the north end of the Old 105 road. There are several good forest road options and I can get you back here to Edgemont or Mortimer.

How about FR982? Leave 105, then go over to 181, then to 982. That would take us to Craig's Creek road at Wilson Creek. How is 982? Is it rough or just like the other forest roads.

Backwoodsbuckeye,
That is part of the route I was thinking of. Forest Road 982 is an excellent choice and is in very good condition and a fun ride. I had an additional 15-20 miles on the west side of Hwy 181 before getting to Forest Road 982. But it can wait, the additional 15-20 miles may actually be too much to add for a one day trip and then get everyone back home? If we are here on the 9th of December we will join up with you folks somewhere up this way.

We could do 105 to rt.183, at that point we leave the dirt on 183. Take that to rt.181 and down to FR982 where we pick up the dirt again. 982 will take us to brown mountain Beach road.
That's a full day riding counting the ride to 105. Meet up in Morganton.
What you guys think?

Is that the road,if going North, you get on from 181 right before Brown Mnt Beach rd and you come out at Ginger Cake?

Do you mean FR982?
982 is off of 181. It runs to brown mountain Beach road, it turns into Craig's Creek Rd.

Going north of 181, right before you get to BMBR , you turn left onto Simpson Creek Rd and then turn right onto Table Rock Rd and follow it onto Ginger Cake. There are a couple of options on up Table Rock Rd. It's been a few years but it was in good then.

Was looking at table Rock road, looks like a fun trip. How is that road? Typical forest road?

Easy road. A little more interesting than 105 if I remember correctly. Used to backpack the Linville gorge during the 80's and 90's. So I was on 105 a lot.

If we are home on the 9th of December I can meet you somewhere at the north end of 105 and I can get you through there fine. I know these roads well, we have ridden this area many times on our dual sport motorcycles. We just rode through there about 2 months ago on our DS motorcycles. There are a couple of very good options if all the USFS gates are still open? The ride will be like the last ride I took you on a few weeks back. That means you will not even need 4X4! It is a lot like the Old 105 road. Anyone that wants to go on an easy non challenging scenic Jeep ride should plan on doing this trip.

Sorry, been off the site for a few days, you know work, sleep stuff.
Ive been thinking about maybe doing tablerock road. Then down 181 to fr982. That would make it a bit longer than just 105.
Other option is Tablerock, then over to old 105 and DOWN 105. Most people go up 105. Its got a lot of scenery. Should be very nice for those who like pics. I'm still game for whatever roads people want to do.
Meet up at 9am. Place to meet is still a question, will depend on what people want to do.

My family and I try to vacation up in the area at least once a year. I'll have to let you know next time we are in the area.

Another good road is Roseboro Rd. We like to ride it when it snows.

There's a lot going on this month, but I'm keeping this on my radar. What would be the time-frame to do the routes being mentioned? I'm in Charlotte so have to factor that in.

If I don't make this one, I'll make one in the future for sure...

Is Saturday December 9th on? I would need to make plans if it is. Looks like it is going to be a cold one too.

Here are some suggestions:

Meet 9:30am in Morganton at:

Bojangles
900 N Green St
Morganton, NC 28655
828-439-8741

Bojangles is only 6/10 of a mile from Hwy 126 across from Freedom High School which takes you 15 miles to the south end of Old 105 to start the ride. The old 105 route is 19 miles.

Do the Old 105 ride and meet up again on Hwy 181 at 12pm at:

Marathon
9041 NC 181
Newland, NC 28657
828-733-1488

The Marathon has a Newland address but is actually across the street from Jonas Ridge Post office on Hwy 181. There is plenty of parking at the Marathon. That will also give other Jeeps a chance to catch up and do the second part of an all day ride.

Since I live up here I will meet you at the Marathon.

It's going to be cold and most likely blowing snow so dress warm! FUN FUN FUN
