Trip thru NC and to OBX

Hey guys,

I will be traveling thru your great state from Ohio at the end of this month. My wife is a teacher and she wanted to visit family and friends in NC and TN. We'll be stopping in Nashville, Gatlinburg, Asheville, Greenville, and Nagshead. I was really wanting to use this as an excuse to visit UWharrie, but after research I see the trails do not open until 4/1/2018.

So I have now decided I wanted to get into some beach driving. It looks like Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills has beach access for a fee and one permit from either town will cover both. I also see that there are more driveable beaches to the south as part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore for a $50 permit.

In your opinion, what would you recommend are the better beaches to drive? We're only staying in Nags Head one night and I want to get in the best beach driving experience.

This is a really good resource for the Outerbanks. Corolla and Cordova are where the wild horses are.

You are correct, URE won't open until April. Partiot Mountain is open though and is supposed to be pretty good. It's near Boone.

Thank you!

These are great resources. I certainly be visiting Corolla as it is public access with no fees associated with it. I am not opposed to buying a pass, but since we will only be there for 2 days, $50 sounded like a lot.

Pretty cool that there are wild horses as well, hopefully we will get lucky and be able to witness them.

You are so welcome. I forgot, Rubitrux is in Boone too! I think it's close to Patriot Mountain. Hope you have a great trip!

I think the best beach is Ocracoke. 15 miles of undeveloped beach. If you are going through Greenville it is pretty easy to get to. It is accessible by ferry and then you can head north to the rest of the OBX.

If stopping in Greenville I would highly recommend a meal at Sam Jones pit cooked bbq. B's is extremely good to but the hours are a little odd and when they run out of food that's it.

If you have time I can direct you to some hunting land that is owned by Weyerhaeuser and you might get to see some black bear. Some 4x4 is required in some areas but it is mudding and can take hours to clean the Jeep if you get into it.

FYI you'll need a parking pass from Friday/Memorial Day to Labor Day weekend from Cordova to the VA state line. Looks like they just passed this.

Thanks for the heads up.

Luckily, we'll be headed up the last week of this month so it looks like we'll miss that time period.

Thank you for the information.

Unfortunately, we only are spending one full day in the OBX, or else I would head down there as well. Hopefully in the near future we'll be able to make it back for extended day. We basically are leaving Greenville on a Thursday morning, spending the night in Nags Head and then driving back to Asheville on Friday.

Corolla is a great ride I did it back in January. There are wild horses in the area as well.
