SteerSmart Draglink, anyone...

Anyone have this problem???

I've been doing major upgrades to the JKU. In the last three weeks I've upgraded everything from lift, gears, steering and just about everything..

That said, in less then three weeks I have a drag link end that is completely rusted. This is a steersmart component. It's really turning me sideways. I bought this Jeep because it was rust free.. Now the only rust on this rig is this drag link end.

We're not talking a $200 budget part..

Assume it’s the silver ring around the joint, with the zerk in the middle. It’s bare metal and will rust if left untreated. It needs to be cleared coated, fluid filmed or coated in some other way to protect it from the elements.

I agree that they shouldn't have left that bare metal. But, that doesn't mean they are inferior parts. I think you are over-reating a little bit saying that the end links are "completely rusted". Just clean them up and paint them. I painted mine with bush-on RustOleum semi-gloss black oil based paint prior to installation.

In part, yes. I've put 15k in parts on this rig in the last month. The only part on a 4 year old rig, that is rusted, is the steersmart. That in definition = inferior. If I have to purchase an $800 set of parts and paint them (when the rest of the part is painted) so they don't rust on a vehicle that is water prone.

Another reason I'm disappointed, is the fact that I was going to do the drag in aluminum and did not thinking these parts were premium parts. Slice it anyway you want to, the parts I received are inferior. Maybe the company will stand behind the parts in which that would make me happier. I'll update after Tuesday.

Yeah, the pictures show quite a bit of new stuff. It's all only a month old, so just wait until some of the other stuff starts to rust, because it will unless you treat it with something or paint it. You are going to be heartbroken when the RCV axles start to rust or the orange boots split. Also, I see that the gussets installed on the axle housing were painted (at least on the outside), so just do the same with the ends of the drag link. It's just cosmetic, and there are so many more important things to worry about.

I just ordered and replaced my Pittman-side of the Steer Smarts drag link a week ago and they sent me some new decorative covers (that would replace your rusted component - one for each end of the DL since they are different sizes) with o-rings. I didn't use them though.

Call them and tell them your story. They may send you a set. They have always done right by me when I have called them.

They didn't send me caps. I would have used them.. I'll call them a give them a shot to fix something that shouldn't have too be... Why lose $800 in sales for a $20 upgrade. Maybe the real issue is getting the kit without these so called caps?

I forgot to add my caps and added them after. In your case they will cover the rust. I wouldn't stress too much about it.

I just received my top mount and the caps were sandwiched in between some cardboard. I could have easily thrown them away, but I heard them rattle.

Steer Smart.. not so smart.

I called this company multiple times last week. Got voice mail everytime..wait. Yes I said, got Voice Mail Everytime. What type of company has voice mail these days for customer service??? The same company that doesn't return your voice mail when you leave a message. The same company that sells inferior products that rust within 3 weeks of putting them on your vehicle (when nothing else is rusted on the Jeep). The same company that doesn't put caps in the box when they sell you $800 of rusty parts. Realistically, they should have just sent them to me rusty if they were going to rust in a matter of weeks..

I called them about the caps, but not the rust since mine are not that bad. They sent me the caps for free. I sanded the rust off and sprayed some fluid film before put the caps on.

That's not right.
Our '18 DL came with caps and remain rust free after 18 months.
The '14 DL is on year 3+ and still rust free.

Sorry you're having trouble.

This would upset me too.

Is this company really in the business of improving things? Because if so, then what is this apparent laid back or penny saving design attitude about?

If this thing cost top dollar, then it better be made well to be worth every penny.

While I know some people have had great customer experiences with SteerSmart, I also know of people who have had bad experiences with them. I like some of their products, but some of their hype around their products is misleading (sometime verging on down right dishonest). While they do make some things I like, I am reluctant to buy anything else from them. There are too many other companies that do a better job, and I will choose to support them instead. Everyone is free to make their own choices, that is my choice.

Next time you spend a year looking for the right Jeep than put $25,000+ into it within the first couple months... tell me your opinion on how the only part on the Jeep thats rusted doesn't seem like that big of a deal.

Until then...

We've all been there man. If you read his build thread(s) he's had plenty of issues with "premium products". I've just installed a $6000 axel that came with faulty ball joints and I had to get them changed out before I could even drive. I can say with certainty this was a WAY bigger deal than what you're going through and WAY more money was involved.

The fact that you're going to such lengths to trash Steersmarts is a bit much IMO. But hey, we all manage these issues differently.

Ive spent $60K plus on my 4th JK. Ive bitched about plenty of things and still do, but a little rust on a part I cant see that doesnt affect the way it drives isnt going to ruin my day.

I can say with certainty this was a WAY bigger deal than what you're going through and WAY more money was involved.

The fact that you're going to such lengths to trash Steersmarts is a bit much IMO. But hey, we all manage these issues differently.

That's too bad that you had to go through that DJS. Let me ask you.. Did you call the company that screwed up your axle? Did they get on the phone with you? If for no other reason to tell you "Sorry we messed up" or "forgot to put all the parts in the box here is a set"??? Or did they ignore your concerns completely???

My level of frustration is a combination of things wrapped into one name Steersmart.. A failure at the level of product quality, service and communication. If they don't like being trashed than maybe they should have the common decency to call a paying customer back. Admit their mistake and rectify it... Otherwise they deserve every bit of "Customer dissatisfaction" they create.

Now let's get to the bigger *point*; if you, a couple other guys and a moderator (or two) want to stand up for a company that created this dissension, for what ever reason you may have... please feel free to do so (no one is going to slow me down nor will I get in front of you). Whether you're standing up for the company that took advantage of a brother or just trying to diffuse a situation because you don't have a dog in the fight, I'm going to raise awareness (constructively) until one of two things happen 1) that company creates a solution 2) I let everyone that would consider a product from Steer*not so*smart know that theirs a better option out there IMO.
