Novice Trails Near STL

Hey everyone! Just picked up my 2014 rubicon unlimited about a month ago. Was wondering if there are any trails within an hour or so of Saint Louis that would be considered "novice" worthy. I've seen a few videos of SMORR and Washita and while they look fun, I'm not sure I'm ready to tear up the jeep that much yet. Figure I should wait til I get a lift and some 35s for rock clearance. I know there is Saint Joe as I ride my dirt bike there often, but it's basically just sand and mud for jeeps. Also if anyone has a suggestion for some necessary trail mods for a beginner that would be awesome! I'm sure I should at least get a winch.

Check out SMORR, they also have some mild trails. Most people post the hard-core videos, not the mild ones, so don't go by the videos. There is a new place, Central Mo. Off-Road park, near Fayette, Mo. There is also Flat Nasty by Jaiden, Mo. Check with the local jeep club and/or the local 4wd club, see if they have something going on. Some clubs will have access to private lands. I also suggest wheeling your new jeep, for awhile, and then decide on the mods you want and need. As my first mod, I put a metal skid plate, in place of the plastic air dam. I then got skid plates for the oil pan, transmission, transfer case, and the evaporator.

If you wheel alone which is never a good idea then yes on the winch. As long as there are other jeeps around, I would hold off on the winch. Yes on the skid plates, especially if you have a automatic. There is a trans cooler line that is exposed.

Check out www.midwestjeepthing.com there is a newbie run at Sayersbrook bison ranch Oct. 18th. A stock jeep will do very well there.

Thanks for all the info and suggestions! I just might be showing up at jeep stock. The rubis got some skids already, but definitely wanna get some for the oil pan and diffs. Do you all usually take off the doors when off roading?

Depends on whether or not you want to clean the interior afterwards.

Jeepstock is fun just 2 weeks away, I will be there! I wheel with the doors on, I hate to clean the inside.

Me too, I'm considering going Saturday but I'm hesitant going without someone I know who has been there before.

Moonlite looks pretty cool, if you end up deciding to go let me know

I think I'm gonna make a trip down to jeep stock. Probably head down early Saturday and camp. Any of you going that wouldn't mind me tagging along on some trail rides?

Billet, are you talking about Jeepstock? If so we all group up on Saturday for the level of difficulty you have chosen. This way its organized with a trail leader sticking to the correct trails, makes it nice not having to worry about other jeeps headed your direction on the same trail. At lunch you can change groups if you chose to move up or down in difficulty. We are headed down Thursday night and camping till Sunday. There are plenty of trails for each level. I ran moderate last year with a stock rubi, I will run moderate again this year but now on 35's. There is still a few jeeps that stick around to ride on Sunday. Saturday is a fun night to be there with raffle of prizes, good food, bone fire , and everyone socializing by it.

You could always roll thru Ferguson at night for a thrill ride.

I can't make jeep stock, I would love to go to moonlight. I just need to find a guide as I probably have the same amount of experience as you.

Sounds awesome! Any idea what time the groups usually head out on saturday? I was planning on leaving early in the morning to get down there. Did your stock rubi get banged up on the moderate trails or did it do well? Just wondering since performance wise mine is stock. Hoping to pick up an oil pan skid before then.

Billet

I am thinking about going Sat. A.m. I was told they head out a ot 9 am. Per google maps it is about a 3.5 hr drive so I was planning to be wheels up at 5 am.

I have the same question you do about trail level.

Yes they start gathering at 9am in the field to the west of the campground. The only thing I had on my jeep was a set of riddler diff covers and evo complete skid plates. I had no body damage, I did knock a corner of the front plastic bumper. But that was just a good excuse to buy the VDP stubby camps. I did scrap the skid plates on a spot or two. I am not wanting to tear up or break my jeep, but things do happen. But it did very well on everything, never had to get tug or winched out. I did have to use the lockers, which I'd rather use than have to use the skinny pedal to get over stuff. If you get uncomfortable with whats going..stop and ask for help. We all were noobs at one time, and people will help you out. Last year I started out with the mild group and at lunch i moved up to the moderate group. You both have a CB?

I don't have a CB, but I'm sure I can pick up one off craigslist.

I looked up the two trials for smorr that jeep has on the badges website and one was marked novice, and the other was moderate. So I figure I'll tag along with whatever group is doing those, starting with the easier.

Good luck I hope it goes well. If you want to go out this Saturday at moonlight I'll be going.

CB isn't a requirement but good suggestion, the leader will tell the better line when it comes to a spot. And there is always chatter and shenanigans going on the radio too. A handheld unit will do just fine since we all well be grouped up. Last year the mild group did 2's with a few 3's throw in. Mod did 3's and some 4's, there more trails than what is on the current map off of smorrs website. There might of been even more added since last year. Wheeled all 3 days last year and didn't even drive all the 2, 3, and 4 level trails. Its what every your comfortable with driving, all the groups have fun.

Definitely want to go out to moonlite, but I'll probably hold off until it's not horribly hot out. Thanks for the invite though! Let me know how it is.

Could someone direct me as to how to register for jeep stock? Do I need to reserve a tent spot? Probably heading down Friday and staying so I don't have to get up crazy early Saturday.

Yea it is looking to be super hot. It's just the one day I have free for several weeks and I've been itching to go somewhere.
