Badlands Aftermath

Well I know I mentioned that the YJ was acting a little funny when we were getting ready to leave the Badlands so I was able to get her home no problem taking the back roads. As I'm sure you all could figure out we were pretty worn out after bouncing around in that sucker all day so there was no way I was going to dig into her and search for a problem that night. Well Monday arrived and she ran pretty good all day long, but something was amiss in the tranny after I took it out when Cecily got home from work. Real soft shifts and a little higher rev until upshifting. Well here is what I found.

Ended up with a ton of water and mud in the transmission, and I think it happened when were were blasting through the big puddle in the quarry would be my guess. Anywho, I went ahead and did a fluid change and filter change, but when test driving the pump seal blew out on me from the water expansion and she started puking tranny fluid out of the starter. So after knowing I needed to drop the tranny just to replace the seal I decided to send the badass lil TF904 tranny off for a rebuild!! After half a day Saturday and then putzing around a couple evenings here is where she stands as of tonight! Dropping it off for the rebuild tomorrow and they can get it back to me Friday afternoon so hopefully I can have her up and running again by Sunday. Still worth every bit of fun on that Sunday!

I have the exact same drivetrain as you but in a TJ, my first outing I did the something to my trans. It turned a 1 hour drive home to a 3 hour drive home. I only had 2nd gear. When I got home, I dropped the trans pan and pretty much found what you found but I think mine was mostly water and a simple trans flush fixed my issues. The transmissions in our jeeps have that retarded vent location behind the Torque converter that is famous for allowing water in. My advice to you when you get the trans all fixed up, stay out of deep water or you will be doing this all over again.

Wow, I used to drive my old CJ-7 through hellishly deep water and never had that issue, that's kind of scary ...

It's been a while since I've posted. Life has been super crazy, but I can say I have the old YJ up and running again as of today. I had to have the transmission re-rebuilt because it was not done properly the first time by another person. So after 2 tear outs and installs, a new governor, new fluids throughout vehicle, new waterpump, fan clutch, power steering pump, and few other doo dads she is good to go. And just because she is a fickle bitch who hates my existence one of the headlights went out on her first test drive back. Next time I'm gonna sink her in a lake, and not a mud pit.

WOW!!! I just found this thread. I missed that outing. That is crazy about the tranny.
You sure spent some money on that ol' rig these past few months.

I drove through some deep water there at Bad Lands last time the boys and I went, but luckily, my fluid is still fake blood red.

Yeah that was the outing your wife had a false alarm with the new one the morning of the trip. Going through the deep water doesn't hurt as much as being stuck in it for a long time like me.

Glad to see you are back up and running.

I can't wait to hit the trails again. Sunday, I am installing the winch and new rear bumper. I might be able to splurge on an auto locker for D30 up front. We will see though.

If you do, it's a sign you have early 97 model year crap.. If you find a brand new replacement blower motor for yours let me know. I can't find one anywhere. I'm currently in the process of changing mine over to the late model year of the 97 tj..we have the bastard year of the tj lol

Yes, they are pretty odd to say the least. Just like the three vents on the cowl and only on is really functional.

Good looking out on the blower. I will research it a little.

You know, I have never dealt with them yet on anything except for parts on my old TJ. There is no doubt that any dealer would always love to sell what he has on his lot, but any dealer is happy just to sell cars too.

Let me know what it is exactly and I will find it or order it for you.

You think they would be happy they don't have to store and pay insurance on a ordered vehicle and still make money off a sale.

In a way, maybe, but in reality, if I can get you to take what is on the lot, then the dealer stops the cost of interest on the one on the lot.

The real trick is getting the right mix of units on the lot. A little of this and a little of that and not too many of those. All you can do is go off of what has sold in the past and hope it sells.

I can see your point, but either way the dealer still makes money.

For me it's gonna come down to color, I'm guessing you guys are gonna have what I want but if it's a retarded color.. Lol

Hahahahahahaha!!!!!! Yes, dealer still sells a car. Just let me know what it is that you are looking for when it is time. I will be glad to order it or find it for you. Remember, there is a time that production on 15's will stop and you will want your order in long before that. Also, I can not speak very knowledgeable here since I don't sell Jeeps, but any rebates will be the ones available at time of purchase and not time of order.
