Nepaug?

Can anyone talk me through Nepaug? What sections are legal and what sections are not legal? Is any of the legal stuff worth it? I believe part of the property is MDC, so I guess I could ask an MDC Officer.

Thanks.

(Yeah, I know, I know. It's important for me to stay "legal". I think it hurts the entire Jeep community to encourage illegal riding. Just my opinion.)

Correct. Dep patrols the State Forrest land and MDC patrols the adjacent property owned by MDC.

But I've been told that the central "road" (Satan's Kingdom Rd) that runs through the center from 202 -> 44 is legal to drive on. I'm just trying to find out if that is correct?

The main "roads" are ok, but the power lines and any off-shoots are off limits. It's only worth it if you live within 15 minutes of the area and haven't taken your jeep on a dirt road yet, it''s basically just dirt roads with a few hills.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but how would you know? I'm a rookie Jeep owner myself, a buddy took me to Nepaug and, aside from one intersection that had "video surveillance in use" signs, it was far from obvious what trails were and weren't open to the public.

Nepaug has been shut down. There is now a locked gate installed on the 202 sign.

Is the gate at the end of Ramp Road off of 202?

Satan kingdom road is off of Route 44 a couple miles down from the route 202 entry point which is Ramp road. I was planning to go there this week again. I will check both entrance points and report back what I find.

Took a ride out to Nepaug today. Went to both the Ramp Road entrance which is off of route 202 and Satan Kingdom road which is off of Route 44. Both had gates up and were locked.

Nnoooo that was my favorite place to go in the winter. Its a great trail when it's full of snow. It's been open for the last 2 years during winter season. That's sad.

gates don't stop everyone... Ramp Rd is open till it dead-ends. they gated just the trail that goes up the hill into nepaug. There is not much to the right, but a few hillclimbs to the left that are do-able.

There are a few places to go in Granville forest too.

Of course gates don't stop everyone. Nothing is ever 100%.

But this goes back to my original point in the original post about legality. Important for some and not important for others. I get that and to each his/her own.

For me the gates send a far more clear message than ever existed in the past. The gates also have large concrete blocks surrounding them on either side. The message is clear: enforcement does not want any unauthorized motor vehicles on the fire road or trails.

In the past it could easily be explained that the road/trails were not clearly marked etx and most law enforcement (whether it was state police, MDC Patrol, or DEP) would give a pass as long as the driver wasn't being a jerk.

Now it is crystal clear: if you choose to maneuver around a clearly locked gate and concrete blocks, you are clearly choosing to break the law and enter a clearly marked and restricted area.

For some, this is no big deal. For me it's a deal breaker. My career dictates that I keep a clean driving record and supporting my family trumps some local off road
fun.

On the 202 side the gate is about 20 feet in from the main road. Just enough to park about 6 cars there.

Of course your right, and most would prefer a legal spot over one that is not.

It gets closed for the winter. When it is open there are lots of pedestrians and dogs so wheeling with care is the norm.
Ramp Road is off of 202 just west of Saybrook Fish House and passes by the Canton transfer station. This gate should open for fishing season 3rd Saturday on April.
Be respectful of the property if MDC decides to close it down it will forever remain closed as it follows the Farmington River and that area is classified "wild and scenic" and will hopefully remain that way.
The trails will run you through and you can come out further west on 202 near Browns Corner in Bakerville. Nice ride for a drive through the woods, but not a challenging course unless you get off the designated roads. There is one that will take you to the top of Satan Kingdom Gorge.

I work directly with two DEP guys who randomly patrol the Nepaug Forest section. You are right that driving off the main dirt trials is not permitted, however, people do it.. and do it often. I work near there and i'm in there often. Do yourself a favor if you're one to leave the main dirt roads... DONT get stuck. Recovery is not an option in many of the areas. If you don't have a winch in places, no way another rig is pulling you out. Last thing you want to do is leave your rig there. Kids party in those woods ALL the time. Stay off the power lines - THAT is the main NO NO there, but again.. you can go in there any given day and you'll see fresh off road tire tracks heading into the lines at every single access point. These are the folks that will ruin it for everyone else. IF you choose to leave the main roads - bring some contractor clean up bags. Every time I go in there, no shit, I leave with at least 3 55 gallon drum liners full of beer cans / bottles - was there last week and ran into a DEP guy i know off the main trails. It was myself and my brother, both in our own rigs and off the beaten path, and he was delighted that we were cleaning up the trash and couldn't believe how much we'd collected. Be respectful of the land and they will not give you a hard time. There were about 12-15 jeeps in there that day and the DEP guy sat with all of us checking out our rigs. He told us, just like I said - DO NOT get stuck and do not litter. No driving like assholes, people are all over in there walking dogs, mountain biking, hiking... it has to be slow going. The reason they are locking the gates in the winter is because of multiple recoveries in the past few years. We were told of several, a few roll overs, and a subaru impreza "rallying" thru there in the snow who sliced is oil pan open. They had to dispatch a haz mat crew to clean that up. There are SEVERAL other places in CT to wheel.. but again.. you have to exercise common sense. Sherman, CT has some great stuff - -been wheeling there with the same crew for over 10 years.

Vizzle,
Thanks for the informative post.
I like to wheel thru on the main dirt roads, stock TJ, I have seen some ridiculous trash, tires, beer cans and bottles, etc.
I have picked up as well.

Better yet join a sanctioned club and do some actual fun legal wheeling. Ever saw the point of wasting time in Nepaug.
