Hard top to soft top

Hi All,

I just bought my first Wrangler about a month ago. It's an '03 Sport. I'm in North Jersey. I bought it on a whim as I've always wanted one and wanted to learn how to work on it....though I don't have the time/resources/location and ABSOLUTELY no experience. Haha...i'll get there eventually. I'm a 25 with a Mechanical Engineering degree but absolutely no automotive knowledge, it's sad. So basically, i'm also looking for friends.

Luckily (with the winter we're having) it has a factory hard top. The one thing I will have to do by the time this weather warms up is get a soft top on it and I have a ton of questions.

I've heard that on a TJ you can actually put the hard top back on over the soft top?

What exactly do I need to go from a factory hard top to soft top. I've found "OEM" soft tops but they don't say everything that is included. I found door surrounds for $50, which i'm pretty sure I need.

How the heck do I do it?

Whose basement/yard/porch can I put my hardtop in for the summer? (Joking...kind of)

Hard top can't go on over the soft top. Soft top has to be removed. Make sure the OEM soft top is for your particular year, if it's before 2003 I don't think it'll fit, same with the door surrounds. I believe 03 to 06 are a bit different than earlier TJ's.

You'll need some form of soft top, a windshield header, door surrounds, a tailgate surround, and a place to put your hardtop. If the soft top requires a frame, you'll need that too (part of the reason I went frameless)

Basic steps are in the manual for your jeep, but I'll through the real basics:

- Unclip the hard top from the windshield on both sides
- Unbolt all of the bolts holding the hard top down behind the front seats
- Lift the hard top off (it may be tough to lift if it's been sitting on there long. Mine was practically lifting the jeep up before it popped off.

For soft top install, you'll have to follow the directions for your top. I have a frameless top so it's very different from a factory or other framed top.
