Jackson Trail Clean Up

EDIT- THIS IS HAPPENING SUNDAY APRIL 24!!!

- We are meeting up at 10am the BAGEL BISTRO
498 Monmouth Rd, Millstone, NJ 08510
GPS coords are 40.166406, -74.415988

- I will provide trash bags and gloves for all who join in.

- Carting out of full trash bags will be coordinated based on the size of the group we get.

- Trail description:
Sandy dirt trails;
some hill climbs, packed clay and dirt with a couple rocks here and there, ranging from casual to pretty darn steep;
mud holes;
deep water holes (if that's your thing, I avoid them);
a couple open sandy areas (think donuts).

No real rocks to speak of, the climbs are mostly hard packed clayish dirt.
It's nice because there are steep, fun obstacles but the terrain is very forgiving.
If it were this steep on clean rock people would be snapping shafts and joints left and right.
But the clay/dirt combo is easy on the hardware.

The trails can get a little tight, I wouldn't want to take a fullsize back there. Jeeps fit well.

As far as a loose plan, one of the first areas we will likely hit for cleanup is at these coordinates: 40.115121, -74.426371

Then there are some fun climbs to wheel on between there and the next main site that needs cleanup, here: 40.112156, -74.409186

Original first post to this thread starts below>>>>>>>>>>>>

I don't know how many guys on here use the trails by Six Flags.

If you've been there you probably know that the trails are mostly legal public "roads".

You probably also know that legal, public land on which to wheel is darn near scarce in the northeast.

And yet, every time I'm there I'm astounded by the amount of trash, mostly in the form of beer bottles and food trash that is scattered around.

Now, I'm pretty far from being "Mr. Upright Citizen Man", and I don't respond well to people telling me how to live my life. I think people should do what they want and accept the outcome of their decisions. But if these trails ever got shut down because of the litter issue it would really, really suck.

We have WAY TOO FEW places to wheel as it is.
There are practically ZERO legal, public trails besides these.
If the place keeps looking like a bigger and bigger trash pile after every weekend it will eventually become ILLEGAL to ride there.

As you men know, talk is cheap, complaining on the internet is worse than useless, and every now and then a guy has to walk the walk.

So I am proposing a wheeling/cleanup day.
I will provide heavy duty black garbage bags and gloves for anyone interested.
Wheeling all the spots and bagging trash as we go.

I can pull this together as early as Sunday April 24 but the following Sunday, May 1st could work instead.

IDEALLY about 8-12 people are down to participate.
We would split into 2-3 groups, each group covering a section of the area.

I already called a couple garbage truck services about a roll off container.
With enough notice, I can call in the morning, tell them we're on, and they'll drop off the container.
This way, we can all meet up, do the thing, then wait for the truck to take the container away and pay the driver together, so nobody has to worry about giving their share to some stranger off the internet.

As far as cost to dispose of the trash, I can have a 10 yard dumpster dropped off and picked up same day for about $350.
With ten people involved it's $35 bucks per person and we will be cleaning up years worth of litter and garbage.
More importantly we will be setting an example that the who litter at this place will hopefully follow.

If anyone has a tie to a dumpster service and can get a better deal then absolutely call it in.
The quotes I got are from Affordable Waste and Rubin Waste.

So I'm ready to put my time and money where my mouth is. I hope there are others in the same boat.

Right on guys.

There's a bagel shop close by that is a good place to meet:

Bagel Bistro,
498 Monmouth Rd, Millstone, NJ 08510
GPS coords are 40.166406, -74.415988

Does Sunday 4/24 work for you guys?

I hope others join in, we'll see what happens by this time next week.
I'll figure out how to dispose of the trash based on group size.
If there's a large enough turn out I'll coordinate the dumpster, if it's a smaller group we'll have to figure something else out.
I don't mind fitting as many bags as I can in the jeep, there's a facility close to me that will take it, but it's a jeep so there isn't room for much.

Spread the word if you have any wheeling buddies...

I applaud your efforts.
If you don't get enough response for a dumpster, one or more could bring a U-haul trailer or similar. Drop it at the trailhead and load it up.

Not a bad idea. If there's enough people involved to fill a lot of bags but not enough to easily spread the cost of a dumpster this might be where I wind up doing.
It all depends on how many people join in by this time next week.
I have a pickup and trailer, so one or both of those might come down to haul the trash away.

This is a fantastic idea. I've only been back there one time, but definitely know exactly what you're talking about when it comes to people using the ground as their trashcan.

Unfortunately, the 24th doesn't really work for me, otherwise I'd help out. Though it's good to see people doing good things.

I have other plans for the 24th, but I doubt you'll get it all done in one day, so if you decide to do it again, I'd like to come help a neighbor!

I'm all for this, but I'm not free either weekend. You could probably get this in the news, getting the truck, maybe even some gas, donated. It will make the example you set spread to a larger audience. I too have not been here yet, but I'm willing to help out anywhere!

A few friends and I have been wanting to plan this same thing for Wharton, but the issue is not as bad there as it sounds here. Hopefully we can do it this spring though!

Bravo RogerB !!! Well said. Im in for some Spring Cleaning. We should try to get some publicity though. Let the people who want to shut down off-roading know that it is just a few bad apples that ruin it for the rest of us.

I'm thinking around 10am.
Grab a bagel and some coffee, shake hands and get names, see how many vehicles we are and come up with a game plan.
If we do wind up with a good crowd and it looks like we'll need the roll off container, I talked to the container service about doing an 11am drop off and 3pm pick up.
3pm is as late as they want to pick up on a Sunday.
I figure that is more than enough time to do what we need to do and still have fun on the trails.

Thanks guys. We'll see what we can get done. If there are areas that need it that we don't get too maybe we can organize another clean up day in a little while. If so I'll make sure to let you know.

If I use my truck or truck and trailer I can bring it to a local dump station near my shop back in NYC on Monday morning. It's $50/ton with a $50 minimum. I can't see exceeding that. If that's the route we wind up going I'm fine to cover it. I wouldn't ask folks to chip in when they don't even know me and we're not all there when the payment gets made. For all you know I could be dumping this stuff on the side of the road and pocketing the cash...

Any ideas on how to publicize this thing? I'm all ears.
Though, I wouldn't want the place to blow up and turn into a parking lot of jeeps every weekend.
Too much publicity might be counter productive....

I've never been out there. Anyone have trail info...mud, obstructions, tree overhangs etc? Pix would help to get general flavor of what we'll be driving thru, on, over.

I'm working on unlocking my first post here so I can consolidate the pertinent info like date, time, meet up location, goals, and trail info.

In the meantime, we have a group of four right now which I think could be pretty effective.

info4tim- I'm definitely the wrong guy to try promoting something like this on FB/Twitter, if you think you can make something happen then by all means go for it.

I will post in the NY local section as well once I get the opening post sorted with all info in one place. There are guys over there itching to get out who I'm sure would be down for the cause.

Right on man- Glad to hear it and glad you can join us.

Are you guys able to meet at the bagel shop or are you thinking you'll find us afterwards?
It's a biggish area with a lot of trails so it is entirely possible to not run into other people that are there.

As far as a loose plan, one of the first areas we will likely hit for cleanup is at these coordinates: 40.115121, -74.426371

If all else fails I'll keep an eye on this site so message me here and we will coordinate from there.

Success pics!!

Just want to thanks everyone who came out to pitch in with this with special thanks to Ruler570 who came with a friend and who both busted their humps out there.

We filled around, what, 20 contractor bags with trash?

Mostly beer bottles and plastic bottles but a surprising amount of "Jeeper" trash like motor oil and other fluids, brake cleaner, broken parts...

We also met with a couple other groups and got some wheeling in.
If any of you guys we met out there recognize this thread, chime in.
I'm bad with names good with jeeps:
an Ultra sweet maroon XJ on jk axles and 37's,
a black JKU supercharged with hutchinson beadlocks,
a silver JK and silver JKU both well built on 35's,
a nice yellow XJ,
a big bad olive drab military HMMWV,
and a GORGEOUS built early bronco.

AFTER!!!

The HMMWV was very cool and this JK was built to the hilt, driven by an very cool guy named Omar:

This XJ totally conquered. JKR axles on 37's:
