I passed inspection last fall with the doors off and mirrors installed. I asked if the place if they had an issue with no doors being on and they mentioned that I needed mirrors, which I already had installed. I wasn't trying to get by with illegal tint. I just happened to need a state inspection and didn't have my doors on at the time.

Same, per the law you'll need two mirrors outside, double check but I installed both. I slowly moved my inspection to the warm months.

I am getting mine inspected today at 4pm. Ever since this new law was established I've been telling myself "no big deal" since I'll just take the doors off but then by chance I found some half doors a few weeks ago on CL so those have been on now and I'll have no tint issues. I will ask them today if it would still pass without doors and how many mirrors are needed...will post back up with the info they give me.

Ok so getting inspected right now. I asked what would happen if I showed up without any doors on and he said it would fail inspection. I said elaborate and he explained that they have to physically put the meter on the window to check that off. Well, I'm here with my half doors with the uppers back at home. I said what about my jeep right now, I don't have any windows. He said well that's a special circumstance. I don't know why that would qualify as a "special circumstance" but doorless wouldn't. I didn't want to debate with him and end up having to go home and get my uppers haha. Thank God I found these half doors!...perfect timing.

So I guess I don't have much of an answer except this particular shop would've failed my inspection without doors but I'm sure other shops would consider it a special circumstance. F*** NY!, good luck everybody.

You should have no problem. I think the guy that first checked me in didn't really have an answer since they have probably never dealt with that type of situation (it's not a jeep dealership). If they try and be dicks about it just bring it somewhere else.

At least we are able to remove our doors. Got some friends that are freaking out about getting their cars inspected now. There's actually some tint shops around me where if you got your tint there they will take it off, get your inspection and then they will reinstall it for half price...what a pain.

Since I am new to NY I will have to get my Jeep inspected in the next week or so for the first time. Other than window tint, what else do I need to look out for?

Mine passes every year with no doors. just need mirrors. Just for ease of mind. I took my Suburban in for a state in January. My windows are tinted medium to match the factory and it passed.

They check for tire and brake wear, wipers, horn, lights, steering, suspension, belts, cooling system damage/leaks, fluid levels, exhaust, brake lines, air filter, battery...pretty much everything.
They also do emmisions testing. This will not pass if you have a check engine light on your dash fyi.

The main things that will fail you are how much tire tread is left and what percentage of brake pad remaining.
Also, make sure your wipers are in decent condition and not all cracked and falling apart. I brought a car in years ago (not the jeep) and they said the wipers failed but they could throw some on so i could get a sticker and be on my way. I said sure go ahead. The wipers they put on cost twice as much as if i bought them in a store and they charged me labor to install them too...wtf!

Welcome to NY, be prepared to be raped for every dime you have.

as a former mechanic in NYC, the inspection is were a shop makes the most amount of money. because 90% of peope drive their cars into the gorund and dont fix anything till its too late, i.e. inspection time. this is actually interesting because i just got my JKU and im about to put the darkest tint i can get all around except the windshield and im not looking forward to inspection next year....

As a follow up to this discussion, NYS law doesn't require two outside mirrors. It requires:

Model year 1970 and newer - must have a left outside mirror and an inside mirror, or both left and right outside mirrors

Key word is OR. Everybody has an inside mirror so only the left is legally required.

Update:

Went to get an inspection this morning, it was raining so I didn't take the front doors off, told the mechanic I need an inspection, oil change, and tire rotation he said no problem pick it up in an hour, I said are the tints going to be a problem? he replied No, and that was that...
