weird 4WD issue

Had an issue a few weeks ago where I was attempting to leave the beach, and was getting power only to the right front and left rear wheels. Never heard of this before. Had it fixed, and was told it was a vacuum server or switch by the back of the transfer case. (not the 4WD actuator on the front axle as originally thought). It was a $30.00 part- much less than the actuator. After 3 times back on the beach, the same problem occurred last night. But, while being pushed and moving slowly through the sand, and shifting out and back into 4WD a couple of times, someone heard a clunk, and I had the 4WD back. Can anyone shed some light on this? Thx.
