95 yj

As the title indicates I have a 95 Wrangler, I blew the tranny (AX-5 w/2.5L engine). I have an engine/tranny swap in mind and could use a lot of guidance. I want to use a Ford small-block with one of three trannies, the AX-15, NV3550 or the Daimler NSG370.

I'm torn between keeping the Jeep stock with minor upgrades, or going all out with the engine/tranny swap. I figure asking the right questions will help me decide.

If I do the swap I know I want a SB Ford power plant with fuel injection and 5-speed manual tranny.

Any comments or suggestions are welcome.

Is there any particular reason or set of reasons pushing you towards a Ford setup? Chevy setups are more common and the vendor support appears better.

Have you thought about finding a 4x4 F-150 and gutting that for your swap?
this way you get the 302 you want, with the injection you want, with a transmission meant to go with your engine, and the possibility of a tcase drop on the correct side of the chassis, with a tcase meant to go with that engine/trans setup.

I have two reasons for going Ford:
1st. Chevy setups are more common, I want something different.

2nd. Politics.

1st. Have you ever thought about running something so rare it is the koolest thing ever? Im thinking about a Powerstroke! you get your ford (well International) power-plant, and its rare and kool combined.

2nd. with the Powerstroke, you keep your politics edge!

Personally, im sticking with the GM, but in an OBD2 setup, but im biased, Im GM trained....

I have actually consider the 7.3 but that's a bigger project then I want to get into right now.

Why not a nv4500 or np435

1995yj318 08-26-2011 07:27 PM

like the engine i would go with the nv3550 and a np231 or 242.

Check out my thread I am doing this right now.....you might consider a ZF5 over any of those trannys :)

The nv4500 would require a body lift and I want to maintain a reasonable CG. The 95YJ is already top heavy in stock form. This thing has to be streetable, I'll be driving it as a daily driver as well as an offroad fun machine.

I've never heard of the np435, I'll look into it.

I've been leaning toward the NV3550. I already have the NP231 and through all my research there are no kits for a Ford SB to NSG370 transmission conversion.

The AX15 and the NV3550 are rated pretty close to the same in performance and strength.

A ZF is way stronger than a NV and not that hard to come up with. I wouldnt run the 231 case either behind a V8

Why would you not run the 231 behind a v-8? It is the same case used in many full size trucks backing many V8s. I can take the guts outta the case in my Jeep and drop them right in the case in my Ram. The 231 might not be as strong as an atlas but it is plenty strong.

Ibuildembig 08-31-2011 09:53 AM

Well the reason I wouldnt is that I have seen numerous 231's blow up behind 2.5's and 4.0's. I am not a fan of any T-case that has a chain in it.
