am I in need of a clutch change....

Just recently, whenever I accelerate the RPM's would increase more than usual but then drop to a normal reading. any help is appreciated with what's wrong.

Yes, if in gear with the clutch out and the rpms increase without a corresponding increase in speed, it's due to a worn out clutch.

Agree with 'Water Dog"...most likely you need a new clutch. Do you know how old or the miles on your current clutch. Have you been running it in water/mud? Mud can ruin even a new clutch system.
If you decide to replace clutch, replace everything; disc, pressure plate, throw out bearing and pilot bearing. Also, once you're in there, check out your flywheel. If face of it is scored, burned or gouged, replace it too.

Slip most noticeable at first if you are on freeway in high gear 4th or 5th and you stomp on gas pedal. If rpms rise initially without corresponding speed increase your clutch has started to slip.

It will get worse and worse eventually damaging flywheel if you let it get bad enough
