opinion on decals after paint

2 Attachment(s)
Hey guys, just painted my jeep. love it. but can't decide what decals i want to go back with. the pics dont show it, but i've already got the "jeep" decals for the fenders in front of the doors. But i cant decide about the hood decals, or the 4.0 HO sticker on the back.

What are your opinions? also, ideas for rear side marker lights? (i just did flush mount led's on the back)

TIA

Just put the jeep stickers on the sides and leave the rest off. I wouldn't worry about the rear marker lights, but you could copy the setup used on the first couple years of the CJ-7 model because the sides of the tail lights were black and didn't have reflectors. My '77 CJ-7 had them

I like the no sticker look, the only one I left on was the 4.0 HO on the rear.

I like the clean no sticker look myself . Either way it's a jeep it will look good lol

One big one on the hood

Thank God you blocked out your license plate, who knows what could happen. One of use could go across country and steal your Jeep ! Or, someone locally could just follow you home but, better not let us see it ! lol !

Have a little respect man, the guy wants as little personal info out there as possible; I mean, he's just watching out for himself, I do the same thing.

Oh, it's also a good idea to re read what you write; it'll make you look a little more professional, i.e. Literate.

And to the PO, if it were me I'd put as many decals on it that I could, especially if they would have been on your jeep originally, like the "Wrangler" decal across the side of the hood like mine has. But like everyone else said, do what you want, or even find a vinyl guy and make your own decals.

I love the retro YJ decals; nostalgia...

I spelled one word wrong. You are going to be paranoid your whole life. I win ! lol

Looool, I was just giving you shit bro, but normally there isn't a space between words and exclamation marks, that's what I was actually talking about.

willysdave 09-16-2015 08:01 PM

You are right, I do it for ease of reading. Some of us are old farts ! BTW, I would put all the stock badging back on, It always looks like something is either missing or they look to plain. Let us know what you decide.

On top of that too though, I feel that if It doesn't have the original decals it looks like the paint job was just kinda of half assed. It's not that important for like the 4.0L sticker on the back since not all keeps had that, but when I see a jeep without the jeep sticker things over where it's out dented "Jeep" it just makes me think that they didn't put as much time into the job as they could have though, and yes like Dave said it looks like something's missing.

Idk though, maybe I just like decals on jeeps so long as they look cool.

willysdave 09-17-2015 12:24 AM

I meant to say"It always looks like something is either missing or they look to plain without them". I don't really like decals on my Jeeps, only the stock ones. I always pay full price for my parts so I don't feel like I have to advertise for them by displaying their stickers. I am about to put some stickers on my old Jeep though. They are new stickers that are repro's. from the originals made in the 60s of places you have went to on Vacation. People used to take a lot of driving vacations in the 60s., they would put the stickers on the back or side windows.

Nice Jeep--but I can't focus on that right now.

Can you please tell us about your twin engine, high-wing (turboprop? Variable pitch props?) AIRPLANE in the hanger? LOL

Y-Yes

It's all personal taste. As a design major in college who learned a lot from auto designers there are different teams of designers, those who do the real body design, and those who add the stickers and phony vents and scoops. The "real" designers always cringe when they see what is added to their "clean" design. I prefer the "less is more" philosophy, which means let the lines of the vehicle (even our boxy lines) be clean from added extras that don't actually do something.
I also don't believe in advertising my add-ons with manufacture stickers, if they want to pay me I'd consider it.

You have a blank canvas.

If you want decals then by all means but, you don't need to be restricted to what the factory installed decades ago.

How about just WRANGLER or something along the sides of t he hood in Matte Black? And maybe RebelBullDawg across the top pf the windshield?

BTW: Your paint job looks like it turned out great!!!

rebelBullDawg325 05-03-2016 09:38 PM

wow, i forgot about this thread. So far i've just put the "jeep" stickers on the sides. Thinking i'll put the "wrangler" back on the hood as well

hahaha, what would you like to know?

Luckymac 05-03-2016 10:04 PM

OP should black out his underfenders or undercoat them.
Being able to see the overspray makes it look unfinished.

I like Raouls idea of placing a decal that is similar in size in the same place as a factory decal but says something different. Maybe I'll puy "Lucky Mac" on my hood rather than "Wrangler". Or perhaps "Moab Edition" on the quarter panels. I didn't paint my Jeep a stock color so why put stock decals on it.

No matter what, they are our old Jeeps and whatever we do, they are cooler than new FJ Cruisers or Rovers. Just my $00.02.

Good Luck to all, L.M.

lol, @willysdave and @Biohazard 294 are you guys getting lonely or something? Wfe not paying much attention to ya anymore? lol, that conversation cracked me up! Anyway, back to the OP's point. Ive made decals out of just print paper and color ink, cut out each individual letter, then use clear packing tape to test the way it looks. You can print different sizes, colors, and fonts of whatever words you want, and for cheaper than having vinyl stickers made and removed. I personally like the no decals on the body look, but my hard and soft top windows are full of stickers. It's all personal prefrance with these older jeeps!

I personally like decals, I also like when people give me their blessing to do what ever I want on their ride. I can make cut layered vinyl (from solid color master rolls) look like "wraps". I was doing this before "wraps" was cool and trendy. It all depends on the look you are going for. Each one of these was a solid color before I got my hands on them. You can go retro or you can go modern. Mild or wild. After all your jeep is a reflection of you and ur style. Look around and see what others have done to get ideas. Make it ur own tho. Good luck.

Heres a thought, how about adding stripes like the ones on ur plane to the bottom of ur jeep? Just sized different and different colors. Decals are not permanent.

willysdave 05-04-2016 11:01 PM

Actually bigearl I was looking for attention from you big boy ! That is until I saw how you butchered the word "preference". Now I don't want you. You be ignant ! I hope you can live with that ! To KMDWRANGLER, I like your stickers. Race cars are a little different as far as stickers, everyone expects to see race cars with stickers, they'd look funny without them. I like the Jeep also, it's classy but, would also look good without them. I actually have two stickers on my Jeep, one on each side and I've never put a sticker on any vehicle I've owned, they were on it when I bought it. Maybe I should take them off, they were put on by the PO.

I was ignornt and stupit long before you seent me spell stuff Dave, lol!

Route65 05-05-2016 09:17 AM

Personally, I think it needs something in the way of decals or markings or it will always look like a freshly painted Jeep that isn't finished.
Don't get me wrong...I love red and it looks good, and I wouldn't clutter it up with a lot of markings, but I think it needs the WRANGLER on the sides of the hood.

haha, i've got another thread going about the inner fenders now. that's my priority! still pondering what decals. I have finally added the "jeep" on each side. but nothing on the hood

Well, You already have the Red back ground, I'd go with Stars and Bars, You Do Know What I Mean?

Well you already have the Back Ground, I'd go with Stars and Bars, if you don't know what I mean, then ask Some Old Fart around Home!
