Hello from soon-to-be new owner of used Jeep in MT

I dreamed of owning a Jeep as a child. My old childhood bedroom at my parents' house still has a much faded magazine pullout of a red CJ5 at the top of a mountain with the slogan "Only In A Jeep" tacked to the ceiling above where my bed once was.

In the many years between, buying a Jeep was first impossible and then deemed impractical, but the wish was only buried, not gone.

In the mean time, my dad, who had owned a CJ5 and a CJ7 when I was itty-bitty, bought a 1964 Willys and much fun has been had in that with him.

After suffering a life shattering loss 6 months ago, I'm at the point of "screw practicality - I want a Jeep." When I voiced last week while on a cruise in my husband's 1974 MGB that I want MY version of a convertible - a mountain road convertible - my husband replied "so go buy a Jeep." Well, turns out my husband was thinking something along the line of my dad's, but I said "max speed on that is about 45MPH - I don't want something I have to trailer on the highway to get to where I want to play." That '64 is fun and all, but... (yes, I know I could buy an old Jeep and make changes, but why change a good thing AND I am not looking for a project)

A new Jeep is still out - still paying on two other vehicles and I am not going to trade either in (want to keep my wonderfully quiet and fuel economic Camry Hybrid for the 6000-8000 mile road trips my husband and I occasionally take, and keep the pickup for pickup things). So ,I'm adding a payment and hence it will need to be a modest payment. So, I started to search.

My criteria: I want new enough to have the Freedom panel roof - won't be able to remove all of the top by myself when on a trip (I travel alone quite a bit on photo and birding trips), but I could remove the Freedom roof panels by myself. 4 door (need to have enough room for my camping and photography gear in the back and would even consider removing back seat for more room). Open to automatic or standard transmission. Open to any color but black or white (I like the jewel tones). NO custom mods to move exhaust high (I understand why some might want that, but those reasons don't apply to me, I don't want exhaust in my face with top off, and I don't want an obstruction to photos when shooting from the driver's seat of subjects in that direction). No mods to make it louder and no excessive lift kit.

I gave my criteria to a Jeep dealer owned by family friends in my home town - nothing on their lot right now fits the bill (their trade-ins are all either newer or 2 door and one has one of those mod exhaust system that I don't want), but maybe they might get in a suitable trade. In the mean time, a used dealer where I live has a 2009 Jeep Sahara Unlimited (blue) that I drive by every day on my way to work and I decided yesterday to take it for a spin. I could be happy with it and time (and spring) is ticking away, summer is short, and I want to play with the top off this summer... It's very likely I'll be making an offer in the next few days (loan app submitted at credit union yesterday afternoon).

Anticipation kept me awake half the night last night - and found me perusing this forum at 3:00am on my phone... And thinking of that Sahara as "my future Jeep" as I drove by it today...

Welcome Katie, hope you get her...

I have a buddy who is selling a 2007 for $15000 right here in Missoula. Whoops it's lifted and has 35's and 2 door.

Stay away from most used dealers. Pm me with what dealer and I'll give you some insight. My good buddy works for the state handling dealer complaints.

Thanks for the welcome, all.

The "soon" can't happen soon enough! Patience has never been my strong suit.

I don't even have a Jeep yet and I am already planning something like fanofny92's bed platform and window shopping soft tops. :)

It occurred to me on Saturday that I'm going to have a tired arm some days. It was Jeep central on Missoula's Reserve St (a street I'm very seldom on, as I avoid it like the plague).

I meant to include photo last time. Here she is: on Monday by Katie LaSalle-Lowery, on Flickr

Just a few more hours until it's all official and I'll have key in hand!

Ordering hard top and door removal kit today. Tonight I'll "move in."

I watched a YouTube video on folding the windshield, so I'd know procedure and what tools I'll need and then decided I'm not sure it's worth the hassle. Time will tell... We have the windshield down on Dad's '64 a lot...

I'm looking forward to repetitive stress injury from waving! :)
I generally avoid Missoula's Reserve St. like the plague, but I found myself on it this weekend and it was Jeep central (honestly! what were all those Jeep people doing on Reserve on such a fine day?!)
A visit to the bank in about 2 hours closes the deal. Yes, I'm counting down!
I ordered hardtop and door removal kit today. Watched a YouTube video on windshield fold down yesterday to learn procedure and what additional tools I'll need (to keep in the Jeep, separate from the garage tools). Then I decided it's such a production - compared to release two latches and ease it down, as on my Dad's '64... Maybe we'll just take his when we want the glass down. ;)

The down payment has me pretty tapped out for a while (on the heels of some photography investments 2 months ago), but I'm window shopping soft tops. on Monday by Katie LaSalle-Lowery, on Flickr
