The Sun Rises on a New Rubicon

Well the time has come to start documenting the new ride.

Been ‘wheeling Colorado since the 1980’s. Some killer trails around here. The first rig was a 1976 Bronco, which I fuel injected. That was a fun truck.

Then there was the 1986 CJ-7. We had the CJ in the family since 1990. 4" lift & 35's. Fuel injected that one as well. Was a great friend. Absolutely loved it. But, times change.

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...924/IeQhFF.jpg

We were ~extremely~ close to pulling the trigger on a JKU Rubicon a few years ago, but we bought a house instead. The Jeep upgrade was put on hold. Fast forward to 2017, the CFO (Mrs. Unbalanced) gave the go-ahead, and away we went!

So, out with the old guard, in with the new.

Picked up a 2017 Rubicon. Granite Crystal. Loaded.

So, in keeping with the title of the thread, I give you - Sunrise on the New Rubicon. :)

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...923/us1ZOY.jpg

I hope to have this one for the next 25 years or so. :)

I have been spec’ing out the new ride for quite some time now. Had a plan for the lift, armor, wheels & tires. So I pretty much knew where we were heading. Found a few new things that have jumped to the forefront, thanks to several of the great builds documented here.

The credit card has taken a beating, with all of the Black Friday deals going on.

The major players are:
2.5” MetalCloak Game Changer Lift
AEV Front & Rear Bumpers
MetalCloak Flip Steps
Teraflex HD Tire Carrier
17” Method Fat Fives
315/70R17 Duratracs
Warn Zeon 10-S Winch

Turning the CJ has funded the majority of the new build, but there are a few things that are just gonna have to wait.

I am still working out the details on lighting upgrades. The under armor is going to have come a piece at a time. Of course, there are a bunch of little items on my wish list as well.

It ought to be a good start.

I am (im)patiently waiting for the great brown delivery truck…

Can't wait to get back out on the trails.

I’ll poke my head in here every once in a while and update the progress.

Thanks Steven.

Your build has been inspiring. Don't be surprised if you see some similarity here... :beerdrinking:

I'll be calling Bones shortly. :bop:

Well, I'm now the proud owner of three (!) Warn winches. The little 2500 on the ATV, the Grand Old 8274 from the CJ (shameless for sale plug here...), and now....

A Zeon 10-S Platinum. What a piece this thing is.

Warn's 10% Black Friday deal, along with their 'We Pay Your Tax' promotion and a $200 rebate was too much to resist.

I hope the wireless remote is all its supposed to be. The increased line speed ought to be sweet. And the lack of an external clutch release is a nice security feature. Along with all of the 'standard' Zeon stuff.

Sorry, I'll post photos later.

Resume party.

[Where's that dancing Snoopy gif when you need it?]

Thanks Rich. Yeah, the clean slate thing... It's been a ~long~ time.

That winter project of yours is something else entirely!

I've gotta stay out of that thread.... haha

Ya... I think I have to stay out of that thread too... Haha..

Good luck with your build. Looks like you have a great plan for it. That CJ must have been hard to let go...

That color is fantastic, but I might be a little biased. You'll love the MC lift. It has changed how my Jeep drives. Good call on hitting Black Thursday/Friday though. That MC deal is unprecedented. Can't wait to see you put it all together.

Yeah, it was tough to see the CJ go. Had him in the fam for a ~long~ time.

Thanks Nate. Yeah, we fell for the Granite. Funny, the wife has a Black Crystal Pearlcoat Grand Cherokee, and the daughter traded her Black TJ for a Granite Grand Cherokee.

Thanks SKT. The CJ Brethren has been dwindling - fewer and fewer around. Still great when you come across a whole group of 'em when out wheelin'.

Thanks, I'm trying to be patient - but that's not my strong suit. haha Hope to have most of the parts in hand by mid month. Then it'll be time to start swinging wrenches!

I'm looking forward to the transformation, too! :)

Thanks Covoj41,

We decided just to eat the cost up front for the Rubicon. But, you can always upgrade - axles, locker, T-case, it's only money, right? :whacky: :)

Woo-hoo!

My email just blew up with a whole mess of Black Friday tracking numbers!

I'm sitting here looking at package weights trying to figure out what's in each box.

Haha. Cheap entertainment.

Unbalanced 11-30-2017 10:33 PM

Alright, time to start in on the upgrades. 168 miles on it? Let's get the air tools out!

Had a bunch of stuff drop over the past couple of days, so I figured since the weather was nice, I had better get crackin'.

First on the docket is the lift.

I chose the MC 2.5" GameChanger suspension system. Like most, I spent quite a bit of time researching different manufacturers and the myriad of lift options out there.

I ultimately went with MetalCloak for the great articulation and on road manners that their approach offers.

I decided that I'd knock out the rear this afternoon.

I took a snack break, and found my phone had a whole 1% battery - not sure what happened there. So a quick three snaps is all I got. Oh well, didn't want to put my grubby mitts all over the good camera. Sandwich? Fine. Camera? Nope. :)

https://s26.postimg.cc/qx9qk3de1/JK_Rear_Lift_3.jpg

I can't get over how beefy these control arms are. A good lookin', too. :)

A little hitch... I don't have my new wheels yet, and without spacers I found that the longer sway bar links hit the stock wheels. So, the sway bar links will have to wait.

Other than that, the install was a piece of cake.

All in all, a great day. Mid 50's at the end of November. Looks like the forecast is for it to be a tad warmer tomorrow.

We'll see how the front side of the lift goes. :)

Nice start right out of the gate my friend:thumb: What's the ETA on the wheels?

Good to hear form you, Steven!

I placed the order last week, but with the holiday, Bones figured I'd see them around mid-month.

I was trying to play the credit card shuffle - waiting to put the wheels on a different cycle. ~Then~ he tells me they won't hit the card until they ship 'em out. I coulda ordered them a lot earlier!!! Arrgghh... hahaha

Oh well. Patience... Patience... I keep telling myself...

Unbalanced 12-01-2017 07:11 PM

Got a bit of a late start today, but knocked out the front lift this afternoon. Went really well. Had to drop the driveshaft to gain enough droop to install the left spring, but that wasn't any big deal.

Got busy cranking away, but managed to grab a few quick pics. Everybody loves pictures, right?

https://s26.postimg.cc/q0vc51r49/JK_Front_Lift_1.jpg

https://s26.postimg.cc/ppdvsaao9/JK_Front_Lift_2.jpg

https://s26.postimg.cc/pqntlpci1/JK_Front_Lift_3.jpg

The only real PITA was the exhaust. Those spacers. Ground off the little nub, worked it loose, cranked and grunted and pried, and slid the pipe back as far as I could get it. Didn't want to align very well, but I managed to get it pretty close. The spacers are probably temporary, I guess I'll need to do some investigation into better options. Question: If you go with an aftermarket driveshaft, can you run the original exhaust configuration - without the spacers?

Oh yeah, MC says the lower shock relocation brackets will interfere with the stock rims, so I'll get those installed after the wheel upgrade.

Got it all buttoned up right around dark, so more pics will have to wait...

Looks like we gained about 3 3/4" up front and about 3 1/4" out back. We'll see how it settles in, and how much the bumpers, winch, and rock sliders affect it.

Color me a happy camper. :D

I highly doubt that this was "Cheap entertainment"....

Looks like the lift went well. Waiting on those wheels would be driving me crazy right now!

Heh, like I said, patience is not my strong suit. But I'll just have to deal with it. As least I've got stuff to keep me occupied.

There's still a few more boxes in transit. :)

scj64 12-03-2017 08:02 AM

I just did the exact lift on my wife's Rubicon JKU and this is my second one. You'll want to do just three bump stops in the front and two in the rear, especially with bumpers and a winch.
If you're using MetalCloak's control arm length suggestion, go out an additional 1 1/2 turns on the front upper control arms and an additional 1 turn on the upper rear control arms. Their measurements are for the 3 1/2" springs. One turn was suggested by MetalCloak as a starting point when I called them about '15 Hard Rock 2 door but after I had it aligned, a 1/2 turn out more on the front uppers brought it to 5 degrees of caster which is what MetalCloak recommends.
I actually went with 1 1/2 additional turns out on the left front upper and 2 turns on the right above their suggestion as having just a little more caster on the right helps with road crown.
When you get all the bumpers, spare tires and winch installed, you'll want to check your track bar length front and rear as well to make sure the axles are still centered.
