Moving license plate light wiring?

If I want to move my plate to the spare tire carrier I need a license plate light. Can I tap into the passenger side taillight harness running-light circuit for power instead of running the wire from the driver side across to the passenger side?
Also, what are folks using for the license plate light? I had some LED "bolts" I can use but is that the best route?

Yes you can tap into the passenger side harness. I used the ACE relocation bracket. I works great

IIRC, I used the RH marker light to power my center plate light. For the mount, I used the Teraflex bracket which allows you to use the existing 3rd brake light. I used a K&S plate light, and I'm very happy with the quality and it even comes with the wire connectors:

Thanks for the link. I have the same bracket. Did you drill a hole in the bracket for the light to bolt thru?
Also, do you have a backing plate or something behind your license plate?

JC113 04-28-2019 10:10 AM

Used the right side marker light to tap off of for mine as well.

brandofamily 04-28-2019 10:24 AM

Anyone recall wire colors for power on right side marker light and ground?

I used a piece of 6061 T6 aluminum behind the plate. It is a little taller than the plate (like 3/4" taller), and it has a hole in it for the plate light.

I see the pics now. From what I see you bolted License plate to aluminum plate and aluminum plate to bracket correct? Then light bolts to aluminum.
How thick is the aluminum? I can only seem to find .025" at big box stores. I might have some thicker in the garage I can dig out.

Yes, that's correct. The aluminum I used is 1/8" thick. IIRC, I picked it up for cheap on ebay.

White with a yellow stripe is the brake light (and turn signal), white with a purple stripe is the running light. (White with a green stripe is the reverse light, whatever that's worth.)

So to remove your spare it looks like you have to unscrew the license plate to get to the bracket mounting bolts, is that correct?

Yes, I have to remove the 2 top screws holding the aluminum backing plate to the Teraflex mount bracket. Then I remove the backing plate & license plate & plate light as an assembly to get to the 2 bolts. I keep a stubby phillips screwdriver & box end wrench in with my lug wrench.

We went with this one, there is a thumb-screw which makes it easy to remove the plate portion. The mount extends through the center cap area but popping off the cap is no big deal. The plate LEDs are plenty bright but the brake light LEDs are a bit chincy. Wired everything to the passenger tail light.

Thanks Chad. There is also a black wire in the tail light harness (at least on the passenger side). It seems to be a ground also. Is that correct?
BTW, I am using a trailer light harness so I can plug into the harness w/o cutting anything.

You have any issue w/ the light flickering when flashers are activated?
I am getting power and grounding at the passenger harness based on info posted above.
Would it be a grounding issue? Should I ground directly to the body?

I've never checked, but will try to remember to tonight.

jac04 05-16-2019 07:11 PM

OK, I just checked my license plate light. There is a very slight flicker when the LH signal is on (or the hazard lights on). I mean REALLY slight, like barely noticeable. I had to hold a piece of paper directly under the light and stare at it to see a slight variation in the light output. No flicker at all with just the RH flasher on.

Thanks for checking. I think itís a ground issue. I unplugged the negative lead at the light and connected it to the trailer harness ground, which grounds to the body. No flicker. Iím going to run a new ground to the metal in the tail light area tomorrow.

FYI, it was the ground wire. I moved it to a direct body ground (w/ a self tapping screw) and no more flicker.

OK, so here's my update.
Turns out I ran wires from the original license plate light to the new light. Like I said, mine flickered ever so slightly but only with the LH turn signal. I grounded it directly to the chassis, and the slight flicker is gone.

Thanks for the tip.

Glad it helped.

I wish someone made a wiring harness similar to the one you run to the drivers side tail light for the trailer that just goes between factory harness and tail light harness. It would have output for license light and 3rd brake light. I know it can be done but I have never seen one. I hate splicing factory wires. Would rather plug and play.

With as huge as the Wrangler aftermarket is, I've been pretty surprised at what a hack-job most of it seems to be. Crappy wiring, missing parts, Chinese tinfoil-grade steel, and those miserable damned rivnuts as far as the eye can see...

I used a trailer harness run from the passenger side. It would do both the running light (license plate) and brake light, although I did not use the brake light wiring... I kept the stock brake light. No wires but or spliced.
