New rear diff axles and ring pinion
Ok, I am confused i am trying to get someone to press on my bearing atm so i can install my locker and axles, but i just heard pep boys could not press them on because i dont have my axle there at there shop.. and they said something about crush sleeves.
I KNOW i dont have any crush sleeves in my dana 44 and i have never done this before.
But now i am worried about setting the gears in place i have all the tools to do it just no press.

The shims that move the differental go after the bearing cap right?? so that they can be easily changed? because its not like in my studys... Pirate4x4.Com - The largest off roading website in the world.

Unless its just much easier with dana 44...

well your first mistake is using pep boys to work on your gears.

next is what bearings are we talking. maybe they don't wanna press on your pinion bearing cuz you are supposed to measure the pinion depth to set the pinion gear properly to your axle. the carrier bearings they can press on no problem, as the back lash is changed with shims on either side, or a larg nut later on.

there are a lot of factors to setting up gears correctly, but i'm guessing this is pinion bearing we're talking about and they don't want to do it because of the pinion depth. and that does need to be measured with the axle.

and yes you are correct about the crus sleeve, they are way off on that one, even if it had one, that has no bearing on the job till the preload is set on the pinion bearings when installed in the axle. which is one good indicator they don't know what they're doing.

if you wanna give me some more info if that didn't help let me know.

You can order a hydro press from harbour freight for $100. Not great if you need to rely on it, but if you've ever payed someone to press out u-joints then I think its worth it.

Yea pep boys was to scared to do the job.. Mr tire wanted 300 dollars haha... But i found a good machine shop that will cut the old bearing off to get the backing plate, Press on pinion bearing press axles togather and tac weld the ring so it dont fall off on the trail!!.. and then press on my bearing on my diff... the shims all go on after the bearing so i dont need to worry about taking them off to put shims on.. oh yea 90 dollars.. And gave me some advice about doing my gears too..

Something is totally scarey about all of this. You said pinion bearing at first which can't be installed unless you do a trial and error depth setup so it properly meshes with the ring gear, which must be shimmed to obtain the right backlash. It's a tricky procedure.

Now it sounds like you're talking axleshaft bearings... :confused: ... what ring to you plan to weld into place? :eek: The bearing retainer ring? That isn't welded into place, that is pressed into place after the axle retainer, seal, and bearing have been installed.

To put it mildly, I'm very concerned over the questionable outcome of all of this. :eek:

Wow, kind of sounds like Pep Boys confused you. Because your Dana 30 does have a crush sleeve, but the 44 will not. The pinion depth can be set with a setup bearing so it can be pulled off and on for setup and then the final bearings can honestly be installed with a block of wood with a hole in it and the carrier bearings can be installed easily with a set of Harbor Freight bearing install tools. Be careful on the 44 also. Unless it's a Rubi housing the shims go on the inside of the bearings and the backlash will change once you press on the bearings. We usually get everything setup and then add 50 thou before we press on the bearings. Everything patterns out perfect after that.

As far as the axle shafts go, yes those bearings along with the retainer ring and backing plate definitely need to be pressed on as there is no way you are going to hammer those on straight.
