I am towing a 3,000# camping trailer with my '04 Unlimited (3,500 tow rating) and am uncertain as to what is normal automatic transmission expectations. I have always had manual shifts which, to me, are so much easier to manage when towing. My problem is that the transmission drops into low gear and jumps to 4,000 to 4,200 RPMs when climbing 4-6 degree grades on the mountains in our area. I find it's necessary to maintain that level of RPMs for anywhere from 2 to 11 miles distance uphill. Is that continuous uphill demand a problem? I also use the Wrangler off road as well and certainly don't want to do it any harm. I'm probably a bit overcautious about all this and know how tough Jeeps can be, but my lack of experience with automatics requires I ask for your help. The engine doesn't seem to overheat but I don't know about the transmission. I am uncertain about the use of a transmission cooler in light of my offroad use. Any advice is most welcome. Thanks!
