Current JK owner here, looking to buy an 05 modified rubicon with a couple questions. would also love any other opinions as well. it is an hour away from me so have not had a chance to drive/inspect yet.

Stats:
05 Rubicon with 105k miles
6spd manual
Lifted with what looks to be a long arm kit from pictures
35" General AT2s
Northeast jeep
will be daily driver
listed at 13.9K

questions:
1. I have read that the 5sp is superior to the 6sp from 05-06. How crappy is the 6? is it a deal breaker?

2. I am weary of buying an already lifted jeep, but judging by the fact that it appears to be a long arm kit, im thinking the modifier may have put a decent amount of money in the build to do it right... thoughts? It also looks like it may have new steering components...

3. It was in a side impact accident in 09 with the original owner and listed as towed, but has had 2 owners since, both of which who owned for 4+ years. I'm thinking this means TJ is fine after the accident... what can i check for when inspecting?

4. Is it just me or does the transmission shifter look different? It looks longer than what i see in the normal 6 spd and also looks like it doesnt have the kink in the shift lever. Could this be a trans swap? or possibly just a new sifter?

Any other opinions are greatly appreciated.

Well, it looks nice and the price seems reasonable. However, I would be wary of any wrecked used vehicle. With some diligence, you can find one with a clean car fax. I wouldn't say its a deal breaker, just be extremely cautious.

I also recall seeing folks say the 5-speed is more robust than the 6-speed. But I also don't recall any major complaints with the 6. Definitely not a deal breaker in my amateur opinion on this issue.

Looks to me like the shifter was extended with a new knob. I seriously doubt there was ever a swap, but like I said, my opinion is strictly amateur.

Good points, thank you! Thinking it it does check out ok I can use the accident as a bargaining point maybe

I wouldn’t consider that rig as a daily driver. Lift appears to be made by Full Traction, which is of marginal quality. I purchased a rig with the aforementioned lift already installed and replaced the arms and coil springs due to quality issues.

Has that rig been regeared? 4.10s with 35” tires is not optimal. By the time you regear and address the suspension you will into the rig for $17,000.

The NSG370 is an absolute piece of garbage. Drive it till it dies you you get sick of shifting like a grandma and holding it in gear so it dont pop out. When it gets bad enough swap it out for an AX15HD

wow good eye on the lift. I asked the dealer about the gears and they were sure of course. Was going to see if i could calc it by the rpms when i drive it

the NSG370 isnt on the newer JKs is it? I have the 6 in my JK and while it does suck its honestly tolerable on a daily and with my usage, i.e. beach driving and light off road

Welcome to the forum.
Only thing to add is to check on insurance if that has a salvage title. It may be more expensive to insure perhaps to the point where a clean title jeep would end up less expensive.

93% of voters in my poll have had no problems with their 6-speeds. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the overwhelming majority of people who talk about 6-speed problems haven’t experienced them, and are just repeating what their sister’s friend’s husband’s cousin’s boss said about something he read on the internet.

My experience with manual trans problems in ALL models is that most of the time they’re due to people using the wrong fluid or trying to shift too fast. Everyone wants to be 2 Fast 2 Furious and bang gears as fast as a bike. Push the clutch all the way to the floor when you shift. Slow down. There’s a rhythm that’ll have you sliding into gear smooth as a hot knife through butter. Learn it.

It is weaker and less reliable and although some argue what is beyond arguing about is parts were very very expensive and are no longer even available

So if you want a weak breakage prone tranny with no parts availability go for it otherwise get a more robust and reliable 5 spd with the bonus of more overdrive and use the six speed for a door stop where it performs quite well

One other question if all the people who point out problems don’t have one where did Novak find a market for a bell to keep the crank sensor and swap the six speed to a five speed
1) selling to people who never had a six speed to replace
2) selling to folks with no issues with their six speed
3) selling to the nonexistent folks with trouble with their six speed

Novak also sells adapters to swap different transmissions in place of TH400s, C6s, TF727s, T18/19s, NP435s, SM465s...they must all be junk.

Again, your only sources to back up your claim are JP Magazine, who “couldn’t keep one alive” (whatever THAT means :rolleyes:), and the fact that someone makes adapters to swap in different transmissions. You’re the one making the claim that they’re junk, surely you must be able to come up with some empirical data to back that up? Nope, just more repeating of internet urban legends. Meanwhile, I take 5 minutes to create a poll in the JK GD forum and out of 68 respondents only 3 had expensive repair bills. That’s 4.4%, shitty if you’re one of the 3 but nowhere near indicative of junk status. I’d expect to have seen 44% from your claims. Or 440% - it’s such a crappy transmission that ones not even made yet are breaking! But nope, just 4.4% in an admittedly unscientific poll, but at least it’s SOME backing.

The build quality of the NSG370 is horrible just look at the shift rails in it compared to a good/decent transmission and it's no wonder they fall apart. They tried to pack 6 gears into a short transmission the length of a AX15/NV3550 to fit into a SWB jeep. They put the gear dentents into the shift housing to help make it compact enough to fit in a 93" wheelbase to squeeze every last MPG at the expense of reliability.



I think it was Novak i read about that was going to start offering 6 speed conversions for older jeeps when the NSG came out. But it quickly started gaining a bad reputation for reliability so they scrapped the idea of selling swap kits. Now they sell AX15HD swap kits for NSG370 owners lol

You are like the guy claiming that a couple 90 year old smokers proves smoking ain’t bad for you

The six is and will continue to be the crappiest manual tranny ever assembled in a 4.0 TJ

They tried to cram a 6 speeds into the length of a 5 speed transmission was the problem. The 2 door JK is longer than the YJ/TJ but apparently the new Asian 6 speed was so long they had to lengthen the 2 door JL wheel base by several more inches to get it to fit.

I assume that this was the problem all along and it just took jeep to undergo a redesign to properly fix the problem. Asian knows how to build a transmission they should have just made the JK longer let Asian build a proper 6 speed for the JK in the first place.

But then you are right back to the problem of jeep not having a 6 speed for the last few years of the TJ. They could have went back to the AX15 since it is still in production but maybe it was a emission problem and they didn't want to rev the 4.0 past 2000rpm before you shift to gain every last little MPG they could. Either way what happened there was just sad.

You do realize the six speed has less overdrive then either five speed used with the 4.0

Thus with same tires and axle ratio the six speed it top gear has a higher rpm then either five speed in highest gear

More gears does not always or in this case equate to more overdrive

Guys is it just me or buy looking at the engine pic isn’t that a ecm/tcm for an automatic on the fire wall?? Looks like either a computer swap for bad one or tranny change and removal of harness??

My 6 speed has been no problems at all, now it only has 40k miles on it. But it's gotten my thru the Rubicon a half dozen times, Moab, and Fordyce and still going strong. Sure the 5 spd may be stronger, but anything can be broken or well cared for. Just my 2 cents
