So I looked under my Jeep yesterday and started to see a puddle of oil under it. It freaked me out so I brought it to the Stealership. They took it in today and told me that my oil pan gasket and my timing chain cover gasket were badly leaking. :( They called me back with an estimate to replace both. I can't :censored: believe it....they want $1050 to replace them. Is this insane??:atomic:

I don't know the book time or labor rate but that sounds high to me.

I was told it was an 8 hr job @ $100 an hr. Is there any local Jeep mechanics on this site? I'm in the Rhode Island/ Massachusetts area. I need to find a good mechanic.

Parts are Available at ANY parts store.....get a few tools and go to work !!
Or live with the mess. It's not Rocket science to change gaskets guys !!
Your taking off parts, cleaning them up , removing old gasket material,
putting on the new gaskets and re-bolting the part back on....Messy but simple.

Exactly. There are also many tools out there to look at for reference to do this yourself. take the time, learn how to do it, and save the ridiculous price of labor you pay at the dealership. Might take a bit longer then getting it done there but your wallet will thank you and you can say you learned something.

Hey the timing cover is covered under a recall for 07-08. Look it up online as jeep jk timing cover recall. And the oil pan gasket is super easy to do at home and the gasket was like 15 bucks at autozone

You may be Right here , they had a lot of trouble with Porosity in the Aluminum castings , thus Oil Seepage..
Good luck.. "BH"

Hi Lelie, Besides the oil leak, I also found I need to replace the catalytic converters. I guess thats normal for having 101k miles on it. Other than that I love it. I'm working on getting it lifted next. Good luck, happy modding!

Ok, so something I've learned about Chrysler TSB (service bulletin). After speaking with a Chrysler recall specialist. He informed me that a TSB is simply a guide for a service mechanic to troubleshoot a particular problem with the vehicle. It is NOT a recall item. Even though Chrysler knows about a problem.

I have been looking into getting an 07 JKU.. Other than the oil leak any other major problems? How many miles do you have on it?
Be really Careful on these early JK's a lot of the 3.8L engines use oil, some use lots and have had the oil run low a time or two hence damaging the connecting rod bearings and crankshaft....
Not trying to scare you away, but just a heads up.
These oil burners do not smoke or leak, its a piston ring issue . MOPAR says
normal oil consumption is 1 quart per 1000 miles !!!
If you decide to buy , check the oil dipstick weekly until you get an idea how much oil it's using. Then change oil brands and weights until you find one you can live with.. I went with 10W-30 and it's working great for me !
