Just bought a 1964 CJ5. Got it running and it runs like a champ...a blast to drive. Lights worked for the past week and all of a sudden just quit yesterday. The parking/running lights work. Wires are all connected and seem fine. Any suggestions on where to look?

Since you helped me out so well with the headlights, I have another question for you. Today I was driving the Jeep and it just quit. I noticed that the fuel pump was not working and I also heard some electrical clicking in the engine compartment. I traced it to the voltage regulator. The fuel pump was being shut off by the voltage regulator. The voltage regulator was clicking on and off every 10 seconds or so. Should the fuel pump should be connected to the voltage regulator? Any thoughts on why it's generating more voltage than required and what to do to remedy?

We got lucky on the lights :)

The purpose of the voltage regulator keeps the alternator from putting out too high of a voltage. You should probably have it checked.

I would have thought a '64 would have had a mechanical fuel pump tho?

Do you have a good ground from the battery to the engine? (can you tell I've had issues with grounds before?)

It does have the mechanical fuel pump, but it has been bypassed and replaced by the electronic pump. Incidentally, the disabled mech pump is mounted with the sediment bowl upright??
The ground cable is relatively new and it tightly bolted to the engine.

I think all the problems you have had is ground problems/loose connections. What does the wiring look like ? Is it all original, or has it been replaced ? You may want to consider running another ground to the body, make sure it's only bolted to sanded, clean sheet metal. Then go around and make sure all ground point are actually touching freshly cleaned metal. Once that is done and you know all grounding points are making ground then you know any other problems you have is not ground related. Also take the ground strap off the engine, clean the area and bolt it back down. Don't forget to disco the batt. first !

I'm not sure if the wiring is original or not but it has been messed with for sure though. There is a security toggle switch wired behind the dash that turns off the fuel pump.

When I had my '64 3B, the original fuel pump with glass bowl was installed. The glass bowl should be on the top, for easy viewing. I replaced mine due to a leak and went with a standard mechanical pump. I would go back to a mechanical pump, easy and almost fool proof. And I did not want any wires around that gas source, silly I know but jeeps tend to leak fluids.

The voltage regulator on mine was acting goofy, like yours. I replaced it so I knew that was one part out of the mix. Took me two tries though, with the grounding to itself process. After replacing I never had another problem. And as mentioned above, make sure all your ground contacts are clean. Just because the engine ground is new doesn't mean the P.O. Took the extra time to clean the contact point. Unless you installed it and know it was done properly.

Also if your lights go all wonky again, pull the dash switch and check for any corrosion on the contacts. The starter solenoid was another area I was having some connection issues with. Lots of sparking until I pull it off, replaced it, and cleaned all contact points.
