Hi to all, CJs are new to me so I'm looking for advice. A friend of mine just picked up a 1980 model, I assume it would be CJ7. Anyhow someone has dropped a Ford 351 engine into it, she thinks, and it is not running. Also she said 4WD was disabled so I assume no transfer case. I haven't looked at it yet. To make things easy as possible, what is the most popular/easiest/parts available swap to get this thing back in order? we would be talking engine/trans/transfer case. And thanks in advance for all replies, I have a 2014 JK:angel:

There are two really good drivetrain swaps for the CJ-7s. One is just throwing a SBC 350 with a TH400 and a NP241. That would be your best bet because I'm sure they've already done a lot of mods to fit the 351. If it was a stock Jeep I'd say go with a 4.0/AX15 (External slave), buut the 350 sounds like your best option at this point.

Good luck!

Going to chime in here.

Without knowing what the engine and transmission/t-case is in the jeep its hard to diagnose whats what. Post a few pics of the engine so we can identify it. I'm going to say its not a 351 ford. Because that would mean the front axle has been swapped to a drivers side drop. or the diff is on the drivers side. If the diff is on the passenger side it probably doesnt have a ford driveline. because fords have their t-case yoke come out on the drivers side.

"most popular/easiest"

The most popular swap in CJs is a Gen1 SBC, An LS, or a 360 or 401AMC (its kind of difficult to find the 390 that came in their muscle cars and not worth the money to rebuild.

The easiest... Nothing is going to be easy about switching you engine/transmission/and transfer case. But the easiest would be find out what the driveline is in there and pull the same thing from a donor vehicle. That way you dont have to weld in new motor mounts, new trans mount, new drive shafts the list goes on and on.

I am putting a Gen1 hoped up SBC in my 77' CJ7 and its a shit ton of work. Find out what the engine is and go from there

Thanks, I haven't even had time to check on it. She said the 4wd was disabled so I don't even know if it has a TC
