I would like your opinions. The 1989 Islander shown below is for sale and I am considering going to look at it. I have owned Jeeps in the past and we currently have a Jeep Liberty. This would be a third car for us, local driver for errands, mountain biking, etc. I am considering putting a little TLC into whatever I purchase.

This Islander is described as a 4.2 liter, automatic transmission, soft top with 164,000 miles. The seller is not the original owner. Someone owed him money and this is how they paid him. It is registered out of state and has not been smogged for CA. The asking price is $3950.

Wondering if I should go look at it and take a test drive. Thanks for any input.

First off, I have always loved the looks of the Islanders. Second, does it have the original carter carb on it? if so has it been rebuilt? the biggest problem I had with my 89 was the worn out carter, I replaced with a motorcraft 2100/2150. and all those vaccum lines were a headache. Also, try and knock that price down some more, with that mileage and it being stock, I wouldn't pay that.

with the 4.2 and being in CA might be a problem with smog. I would want it smogged before I bought it. many people in other states swap carbs and remove most of emissions, a real no no where you live.
it is a sharp looking jeep and the price is good, just be careful.
also, if you don't mind doing some work to it, the howell fuel injection kit works great and is CA legal, it costs about 1,200.

Nice loooking JEEP it looks good however you really have to check out the older YJs but for your area the price seems fair. Check that thing out the 89 YJ is fun to drive.

I dont know. It looks clean, but if you look at the step and flare it looks like it has been beat pretty good and maybe rattle canned. It is carberated, and the milage is close to rebuild time. That doesnt look like a real half door, and it only has a bikini top. Does it come with a full soft top or hard top? Also the seats are covered which makes me think they are beat to hell. Everything else looks stock, great if you want to just drive it around town, but if you want to take it through anything fun it will cost about $2000. You can get a lifted jeep from someone who has done aftermarket stuff to it for that price. I think that price is high. I would think more like $3000-$3200 tops. Guy a few miles from me is selling a TJ for $2000 with 125k on it. Those deals arent common, but if you wait they do come around. I paid $2150 for my 95 YJ with 96k miles on it, but had a to do a little work. Was still almost $2000 cheaper though.

Thanks for the input. I have always liked the look of the Islander trim package also. I cannot tell from the photos if this Jeep even has the sun decal on the hood. Haven't made arrangements to see it yet as the seller is out of town until Tuesday. This Jeep does not include any other tops other than what is in the photo. I confirmed the seller has the title to the vehicle. He also has an extra set of plastic doors with windows. He has had the Jeep for six weeks. I'm not sure how long it's been advertised for sale. I guess I won't know more until I look at in person and I'll keep the above comments in mind. The smog does concern me though.
