If it goes into 4hi then it is not a vaccuum problem. To get into 4lo you need to pull the shifter back until it stops, then to the left ,and then back. It may take a bit of force. especially if it hasn't been in 4lo in a while. Eat your wheaties and give it another try.

So are you saying that you physically can't get the shifter to go into 4LO? If that's the case then get underneath and make sure the linkage isn't bent or being interfered with.

tell you what, I drove an Auto trans. yj for about two days that I had to use my foot to shift it into 4LO..... it would go in and work fine, but it was tough to get it in.

What gear do you have it in when you try to shift it? If you haven't tried it, make sure you're in neutral when you shift it. Let off the brake to take some pressure off the transfer if need be.

In the new TJ's, I have had Jeep mechanics tell me that with an auto, the easiest way to shift into 4-Low is with the vehicle in Neutral AND turned off. (found this out after I destroyed the linkage on a 3 DAY old Jeep  . Turns out they had forgotten a bushing at the transfer case... Gotta love Jeeps! :D ) I am not sure if this is useful in the YJ's also, but you might as well try, will be a lot cheaper than any other fix!
