i have a 1997 wrangler sport i recently had a problem getting it started. i traced it down to a bad fuel pump relay i think. i put a jumper wire in were the relay goes and it runs great. so i bought a new relay and put it in and it wont start but runs with the jumper wire i made. am i over looking something.

i bought another one and still the same thing
so it wont start like immediately after you put in the relay?
can you hear the pump running when you turn the key on?
it might be the wires that control the relay thats bad or loose.

I am just guessing but the pump only primes the system for a certain amount of time initially so if you pressure reg was bad you would need to cycle the key a few times or bypass the relay and make the pump run all the time.
This is just me guessing though. Try putting either relay back in and cycle the key . . . I think 5-6 times leaving it in the on position for a few secs and then try to start it. If it starts then I might think about a regulator
